THE NAPA VALLEY
THE POSITION
This recruitment is being conducted to fill one full-time Senior Library Assistant vacancy, and may be used to fill future vacancies for up to one year. Although the current vacancy is at the Main Branch in Napa, there may be opportunities at other branches in the future. The work schedule for the current vacancy is Tuesday - Saturday from 8am - 5pm/9am - 6pm. This is subject to change based on operational needs of the Library.

The Senior Library Assistant oversees the Circulation Unit of the Library in the absence of a supervisor, provides work leadership and training to other employees, and does the daily scheduling of up to 15 extra help employees. This position requires incumbents to work closely and cooperatively with library patrons as well as staff. While working knowledge of library policies and procedures is helpful, excellent customer service skills, sensible leadership, and problem solving skills are extremely important. Good written and oral communication skills; computer skills, especially with Microsoft Office; and cash handling skills  are also highly desired.

THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS
1.  Applications are due by 5:00 P.M. on Monday, October 10, 2016.
2.  Applications will be screened for minimum qualifications the week of October 10, 2016.
3.  Qualified candidates will be invited to take an online assessment the week of October 17, 2016.
4. Those who score high enough on the online assessment will be invited to participate in speed interviews, tentatively scheduled to take place the week of October 31, 2016.
5. The most qualified candidates from the speed interviews will have their supplemental responses scored by subject matter experts the week of November 7, 2016.
6. Those who score high enough on the supplemental questions will be invited to participate in oral panel interviews, tentatively scheduled to take place the end of November 2016. Only the most qualified candidates from the interview process will be placed on the eligibility list and may be considered to fill positions for up to one year.
The Human Resources Department reserves the right to change the recruitment process at any time.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Serve as lead worker in the Circulation, Technical Processing, or Interlibrary Loan section of the Library; oversee and participate in checking out and checking in books, issuing library cards, and maintenance of automated patron and circulation records; assist patrons in finding materials; assist them with the use of the library catalog; oversee the work of Vocational Assistants and volunteers as requested; schedule and prioritize work; provide training to less experienced staff to include operations of specialized equipment and automated library systems ; perform a variety of circulation or technical processing duties such as are performed by Library Assistants; communicates with library users, coworkers, other agencies, and vendors to explain policies, obtain or give information, collect fees or fines, and resolve complex problems or discrepancies; maintain records of library materials ordered from vendors, status of loaned or borrowed material and/or library statistics; performs a variety of support tasks and other paraprofessional work, such as word processing, bookkeeping, and accounting, research, or other special projects; demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service; conduct processing of books and other library materials; maintain bibliographic records; and establish and maintain collection files and records; perform standard office support work such as answering telephones, ordering supplies, and data entry into various automated systems; manages the ordering, processing, routing, and payment for all serials orders; place orders, receive, and check invoices of library material. Monitors fund accounts to make sure that materials are ordered against the appropriate account and those adequate funds are available to make purchases; receive, unpack and sort shipments of new library materials them for further processing; and gather statistics and prepare reports as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Library terminology and standard library practices and techniques.
Types and uses of library materials and the literature and current publications used in the Library.
Clerical techniques, office methods, and office machines.
Automated library information systems.
Training methods.
Specific rules, regulations, and procedures of the Library and their applications.

SKILL TO:
Perform a variety of sub-professional library tasks in circulation and technical processing.
Provide basic reference information to patrons.
Train others in a variety of library assistant duties.
Plan, schedule and prioritize work for lower level staff.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities. A desirable combination is:
Experience:
Three years of significant, directly related and progressive sub-professional library experience.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training in library systems and processes.
License or Certificate:
Certain positions assigned to this class may require possession of a valid California Driver's License.
