Job Summary


The Evening and Weekend Circulation Desk and Stack Maintenance Coordinator position is part of the University Library User Experience Unit. The incumbent works respectfully and cooperatively with employees of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library to perform duties under general supervision, but works independently to achieve specified outcomes.

This position provides leadership and planning for the library’s circulation desk during evening and weekend hours. It is also responsible for Stack Maintenance on San Jose State Collections in King Library. This position is responsible for providing library services on behalf of the University.

Key Responsibilities


  • Collaborate with the weekday desk coordinator to ensure consistent standards of service and training for library staff and student assistants working at the circulation desk and other library service points.
  • Provide backup support to frontline staff working the service desks and resolves difficult patron problems.
  • Interact on a daily basis with University faculty, staff, students and parents relating to sensitive and/or confidential information.
  • Responsible for overseeing policies and procedures during regular, SJSU extended hours and all night study during finals.
  • Serve as primary contact and communicates regularly with Library Community Service Officer’s during evenings and weekends.
  • Coordinate and administer library access and data collection for other CSU students utilizing the library.
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of ALMA Fulfillment functionality to handle all complex system inquiries.
  • Evaluate and analyze circulation data and provide feedback and make recommendations for improving library policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


  • In-depth knowledge of User Experience Department and Stack Maintenance Services and the ability to adapt work related procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of library methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports
  • Thorough knowledge of the policies and procedures of the library; how the units of the library interact with each other and how the library interacts with the university
  • Working knowledge of the library’s collection; on-line catalog; and computer applications in the library; library terminology, general bibliographic forms and structures
  • In-depth knowledge of classification schemes, including Library of Congress and Dewey decimal systems
  • Working knowledge of the Alma circulation system
  • Thorough knowledge of the institution’s and library’s policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of lead work direction including assisting in employee selection, training employees in new work procedures, assigning work, organizing work flow and establishing priorities, reviewing work, providing input to performance evaluations and promoting teamwork to optimize effectiveness
  • Ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgment
  • Working knowledge of software applications; including, but not limited to word processing, spreadsheet, database management, integrated online library systems, Internet and e-mail
  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment; handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects for a team
  • Must possess strong oral communication skills; excellent customer service and public relations skills
 

Required Qualifications


High school education or equivalent certification
Four years of related library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education. 

Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three (3) years of experience in an academic library setting
  • Working knowledge of Alma circulation system, or comparable library
  • management system
  • Knowledge of Alma analytics
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, Google Drive
  • Experience with Primo Discovery system, Leganto, RefAnalytics and Springshare Suite products
  • Experience in analyzing physical spaces and workflows to improve productivity
