The following duties are typical of those performed by the incumbents in these classifications; however, other duties may also be required.
Circulation/Public Service:
- Provides reference and readers advisory service to customers under the direction of the Librarian; helps customers make effective use of the library; provides high level customer service to a diverse community in-person, over the phone, and through email and internet;
- Develops and maintains desk schedules; ensures adequate coverage;
- Oversees all aspects of the circulation function, including registration of borrowers and posting and monitoring overdue charges;
- Responds to customer complaints as appropriate and refers difficult problems to supervising librarian;
- Serves as lead worker for the Library Assistants and Pages; schedules; trains; may monitor workflow; and models expected behaviors;
- Creates a positive, supportive work environment;
- Develops and maintains effective relationships with customers, the Friends of the Library, and the community;
- Assists customers with public access computers; troubleshoots computer and library equipment problems;
- Prepares time sheets and financial records;
- Explains library policies and procedures to customers and staff;
- Oversees branch deliveries;
- Maintains the collection of local documents and other special materials;
- Provides input into collection development;
- Ensures that the building is opened and closed on time; sets building alarms;
- Receives, receipts, and deposits monies paid for fines and fees and lost or damaged materials;
- Recommends changes in library policy and procedures;
- Maintains inventory of branch supplies;
- Performs outreach and represents the library in the community;
- May take a lead role at a branch, department, or unit to cover vacations, sick leave, or a vacancy;
- Expands knowledge of field by keeping abreast of library developments by attending workshops and educational programs and reading periodicals and specialized literature;
- Works on improving customer service skills by attending relevant meetings and/or workshops;
- Recruits, trains, and provides orientation for library volunteers;
- Provides input into collection development;
- Conducts library programs; may also plan, develop and evaluate the programs;
- Other related duties as assigned.
Technical Services:
- Provides a high level of customer service to a diverse community in-person, over the phone, and through email and internet;
- Responsible for the acquisitions function including ordering, setting up, scheduling and merging carts, receiving materials, processing electronic invoices, and manual creation of invoices;
- Liaison to vendors to ensure accurate order records and invoices including electronic media;
- Liaison to library staff concerning questions on orders;
- Oversees the processing function including label production and ordering of supplies;
- Familiar with materials processing standards;
- Trains and oversees processing staff;
- Creates a positive, supportive work environment;
- Works with Cataloging Librarian to train support staff and coordinate their work;
- Performs basic trouble shooting for library computers;
- Participates in updating and maintaining the library database;
- Responsible for the maintenance of computers and office equipment;
- Runs automation reports and notices;
- Assists Business Manager with tracking and reqporting acquisitions;
- Creates statistical reports for internal and external customers as assigned;
- Maintains necessary records for section, including procedural manual and statistics;
- Expands knowledge of field by keeping abreast of library developments by attending workshops and educational programs and reading periodicals and specialized literature;
- Works on improving customer service skills by attending relevant meetings and/or workshops;
- Other related duties as assigned.
