Sacramento - California State Archives - Student Worker

Grant-Funded Student Position, California State Archives The California State Archives, through the Friends of California Archives, is seeking one student to work 20 hours a week as a scanning assistant on an important digitization project. Working hours will be primarily Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Archives is conveniently located at 1020 O Street in Sacramento (Archives Plaza Light Rail stop). Throughout their employment, student employees must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, preferably related to history or library science.

Pay: $10.25/hour
The Position: The California State Archives, through the Friends of California Archives, has received funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission for a one-year digitization project starting in April 2014. This part-time, non-benefited student position includes hands-on experience in digitization of unique 19th Century records and the observation of many stages of archival activities.
Project funding is for one year and students must commit to 20 hours a week of work during the grant period.
After appropriate training by the project director, the student assistant will:
Digitize materials using a flatbed scanner.
Review images against originals to assure authentic representation and correct resolution.
Name, save, and organize images according to project specifications.
Perform preliminary image correction including skew correction and cropping.
Link images to appropriate metadata.
Minimum Qualifications: Experience with PC-based computer systems. A basic understanding of image file types and metadata. A willingness to learn scanning software. An ability to handle repetitive tasks, pay close attention to detail, and produce high-quality work.
Desirable Qualifications: The ability to work well both as a team member and individually. A willingness to learn new skills. Good computer skills, especially in imaging programs, preferred. An ability to move boxes that weigh up to 40 lbs. is also helpful. Specific experience in archival work is not necessary but an interest in digitization and archival activities is encouraged.
