Position Summary
At the California Digital Library (CDL), we believe passionately that the library, in all its forms, is critically important to the vital work of students, scholars and the public. As a University of California systemwide library, CDL provides services to and on behalf of the UC system as a partner and collaborator to the UC campus libraries. As a globally-connected digital library, CDL occupies a unique position between the local UC campuses and the global digital library infrastructure. The user base for CDL services and programs includes UC faculty, students and library staff; the patrons of the consortia in which the UC Libraries participate; and the many people worldwide who benefit from UC's open access offerings.

The CDL Discovery & Delivery (D2D) Director is responsible for working collaboratively across CDL and with stakeholders at UC and beyond to develop a forward-thinking strategic vision for the essential services and technologies that connect faculty, students and staff to UC collections and open access materials. The director provides oversight, encourages collaboration and innovation, and ensures the successful operation of D2D systems, services and initiatives.

Reporting to the CDL's Associate Vice Provost/Executive Director (AVP/ED), and consulting within the UC Libraries' ten-campus advisory structure, the D2D director is a member of the CDL senior leadership team tasked with planning and implementing a comprehensive and coordinated suite of digital library services. The D2D service portfolio includes:

- Melvyl - UC Libraries' union catalog/discovery service run on OCLC's WorldCat Local
- Request - ILL and document delivery services built atop of OCLC's VDX
- UC-eLinks - UC Libraries' link resolver run on Ex Libris' SFX
- Zephir - a metadata management system for the 15 million+ volume Hathi Trust digital library
- Agua - a shared print management system that supports the Western Regional Storage Trust (WEST) and UC Libraries Shared Print programs

In addition, the UC Libraries and CDL are currently pursuing a plan to investigate, select and implement a consortial Intergrated Library System for the UC Libraries; the D2D program will assume a primary role in the success of the project. We expect this consortial ILS, once implemented, to significantly reconfigure the D2D service portfolio and create opportunities to rethink the contemporary infrastructure required to fulfill the ongoing key requirements of discovery, link resolution and interlibrary loan across the system.

The D2D program includes a thirteen member team of experienced, dynamic and highly dedicated software engineers, metadata analysts and service manager employing an Agile approach to creating and maintaining D2D systems.

Duties
Develop and manage a comprehensive discovery and delivery service portfolio that aligns with broader CDL and UC Libraries' strategic plans, with the goal of continuously uncovering and serving the University's research, teaching and learning needs.

Work with stakeholders to define a vision and guide implementation of actionable strategic plans, policies, and fiscally sustainable approaches to the development and operation of discovery and delivery services and infrastructure.

Advocate for the adoption and ensure the effective stewardship of indispensable discovery, resource sharing and bibliographic services in alignment with complementary CDL, UC and external community initiatives.

Strategic planning
Oversee D2D operational and administrative activities, with the goal of creating innovative and sustainable discovery and resource sharing services to support scholarship, teaching and learning.

Actively cultivate productive relationships and cross-portfolio initiatives between the D2D program staff and other CDL programs, including the Access & Publishing program, the Collection Management program, and the UC Curation Center.

Lead a team of software engineers, analysts and service managers; foster a culture of teamwork, technical excellence and innovation; motivate team members to do their best work; create a hiring process that attracts outstanding candidates of all backgrounds; and create a staff professional development process that consistently improves team performance.

Programmatic oversight
Communicate, consult on, and advocate for D2D and CDL's activities to University stakeholders and other national communities of common concern and practice. Develop and encourage ongoing dialogue with UC colleagues and the users of D2D tools and services; actively partner with UC librarians to promote service awareness and adoption.

Community engagement
As a member of the CDL Director's Cabinet, actively participate in setting CDL-wide policies and priorities, and engage in a continuous process of establishing CDL's development directions and priorities. Taking into account the intersection of programmatic needs and decision-making across the CDL organization, assist in establishing collaborative approaches to shared staffing, the pursuit of new opportunities, and resource restraints.
