Ideal Candidate
The Supervising Library Specialist is an advanced journey-level classification in the Library Assistant series and is distinguished from the Library Assistant I and II by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible duties assigned to positions in the Library Assistant class, including responsibility for a functional service area. Employees assume increased responsibility in preparing standard and specialized reports from the library’s patron, collection and circulation databases, and increased responsibility in planning, organizing and coordinating library circulation and technical services or providing specialized reference and programming services.

DESCRIPTION
The UC Davis Mabie Law Library is recruiting for a full-time career Librarian.
The Mabie Law Library is an integral part of the UC Davis School of Law, and provides services that support the teaching, research, and scholarship of its students and faculty. The Library’s collection and staff are housed in King Hall on the Davis campus. The Library has access to more than 10,000 databases which are provided through its library licenses, campus, and UC-wide license agreements.



Responsibilities:
Responsible for management of the Technical Services and Circulation departments, including overall supervision of the library staff within those departments.

Contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of all aspects of Circulation and Technical Services policies, procedures and publications; and provides input regarding development of long range goals, budgets, space and technology, personnel procedures, equipment purchases and daily operational needs.

Technical Services duties include the Ordering, Receiving, Processing, and Bindery operations of the library; establishes criteria for holdings information to be displayed in the public catalog and keeps detailed statistics for all acquisition transactions.

Implements procedures for the Circulation function including Stacks Maintenance, Course Reserves, Government Documents, and Interlibrary Loan services; manages the maintenance of special collections, including Rare Books, Special Collections, and Archives.

Overall supervision of the cataloging function for the library including the evaluation and revision of existing cataloging policies and procedures, the copy cataloging of materials, performs searching and transfer of authority records to and within Sierra catalog, coordinates with OCLC, University Library, Melvyl Local as needed to keep our records in sync and up to date with library standardizations and new formats.

Investigates as appropriate, new technologies and systems relevant to Circulation and Technical Services. Participates in library and Circulation department marketing and communications efforts.
Oversees the library’s integrated library system (ILS) Innovative Sierra and identifies applications useful to the library’s procedures. Coordinates Sierra ILS trainings and updates when necessary and works closely with Innovative Interfaces help desk and the Law School’s Information Technology staff to troubleshoot any problems that may arise.

Reports directly to the Library Director.

Basic Qualifications:
MLS or equivalent from an ALA accredited library school;
Substantial knowledge of print-based and online resources and library ILS systems, experience working with various library vendors and publishers;

Reports to the Head, Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA). In collaboration with the Head the Manuscript Coordinator establish policies and workflows for accessioning, processing, arrangement, and description. Develop and implement priorities for processing historical collections and institutional archives in analog and digital formats. Works with SCUA and subject librarians on the appraisal of new collections and the intake of new acquisitions. Collaborates with SCUA librarians to plan the goals and priorities for collection processing and cataloging. Serves as the unit’s expert on DACS and EAD and the use of relevant software, such as ArchivesSpace. Provide training to students and staff in arrangement and description.

High school diploma or equivalent certification AND two (2) to three (3) years of related Library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Incumbent at this level perform more complex or specialized technical and paraprofessional library duties to support daily library operations and/or programs. They typically possess a broader knowledge of library functions within their functional area and/or have in-depth knowledge in their specialty area. The position may be assigned to any area of library operations and may be rotated among services, such as children’s, adult reference, circulation, technical processing, makerspace, and branch library services; incumbents may direct the work of full-time and part-time staff and volunteers; as well as perform assigned duties such as reference, community presentations, program planning, collection development.

The ideal Librarian should be enthusiastic about programming and event planning, value public service and community input, and able to teach computer skills to patrons and co-workers alike.  Librarians assist patrons in making effective use of library facilities and technology; answer reference questions, including helping patrons one-on-one with technology; and provide coaching, training, leadership and mentoring to staff. Spanish language skills are desirable.
QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical qualifying background would be:

Education: Librarian I (Lib. I): None; Librarian II (Lib. II):  Two years of progressively more responsible municipal library experience.

Training: Both levels require a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and a Master's of Library Science from a university accredited by the American Library Association.
 
Licenses/Certificates: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, appropriate California driver’s license and a safety driving record, which must be maintained as a condition of employment.

Ideal Candidate The Supervising Library Specialist is an advanced journey-level classification in the Library Assistant series and is distinguished from the Library Assistant I and II by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible duties assigned to positions in the Library Assistant class, including responsibility for a functional service area. Employees assume increased responsibility in preparing standard and specialized reports from the library’s patron, collection and circulation databases, and increased responsibility in planning, organizing and coordinating library circulation and technical services or providing specialized reference and programming services.

Summary

The Menlo College Bowman Library seeks a creative, dynamic, innovative and team-oriented individual for the position of Information and Resource Services Librarian. This is a full-time, 12 month, exempt position with benefits, reporting to the Dean of Library Services. Some evening and weekend hours may be required during the Academic Year (End of August through beginning of May). The Information and Resource Services Librarian’s primary responsibilities include providing research and resource services. Bowman Library is small, dynamic library focused on serving the population of Menlo College. Menlo is a small, urban, diverse, 4 year residential college granting degrees in Business and Psychology located in Atherton, CA. The library team cultivates and maintains strong relationships with faculty; nurtures an understanding of Menlo College teaching programs; and collaborates on campus-centered initiatives to deliver timely and effective library services.
