Basic Function:

Summary
We seek an energetic, innovative, and collaborative librarian to spearhead the effort to create a program in support of scholarly publication innovation and act as a campus resource on copyright, fair use, and open access. Under the general direction of the Head of Collection Management Services, the Scholarly Communication Librarian will lead efforts to design systematic and sustainable approaches to outreach and new services that support dissemination of scholarly output. This position will offer guidance on library services and university policy to the Library and to faculty, students, and staff on matters pertaining to scholarly communication, such as institutional repository best practices, academic publishing guidance, copyright and fair use, and open access support.

Essential Duties
Develops and implements the Library’s scholarly communication program in coordination with Collection Management Services, Research and Instruction, Special Collections and University Archives, Library Systems and Information Technology, and Library Administration. Develops a vision and creates goals and objectives for a cohesive program.

Leads development and implementation of an education program for Library employees on issues of scholarly communication. Advises on how librarians in all subject areas can educate and communicate with their constituencies around issues of scholarly communication.

Develops and implements a program to increase awareness among faculty, researchers, and students about scholarly communication issues in the digital environment, alternative publishing models, and Open Access. Devises a strategy for populating and promoting use of the campus institutional repository.

Develops and maintains a broad network of partners, e.g. the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), Information Resources and Technology (IRT), the Office of Research, Innovation and Economic Development (ORIED), students, faculty and staff, California State University (CSU) system-wide offices, and the scholarly community to inform, support, and advance the library’s scholarly communication programs and goals.

Stays informed of, and shares with the library and university staff and faculty, national and international trends, legislation, and pending changes in intellectual property rights, commercial and academic/research scholarly publishing, and information technologies that affect access and preservation of scholarly information.

Leads Library participation in current and newly developed initiatives that encourage and enable faculty to manage their own copyright and data and improve access to published research. Establishes mechanisms to assist faculty with publishing choices, data management plans, licensing agreements, and fair use of copyrighted works as users of information.

Uses assessment tools to help measure and track success in the scholarly communication outreach and educational program.

Assists in the establishment of library policies and procedures by actively participating in departmental and library affairs. Contributes to departmental, library, campus, and professional meetings as appropriate.

Appointment Specifics
This is a probationary, 12-month, tenure-track position at the Senior Assistant Librarian rank with an expected start date of Spring 2019; salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Librarians in the CSU system enjoy full faculty status and as such are eligible for campus service opportunities, sabbatical and other leaves, and additional benefits. Librarians are represented under Unit 3 of the California Faculty Association (CFA). Hoover Institution Library & Archives seeks archival assistants to aid in the processing of the Martin Anderson papers. Martin Anderson was an advisor to presidents, influential conservative intellectual, author and fellow at the Hoover Institution. Assistants participate in a variety of projects related to providing access and description to collection material under the direction of archivists, librarians, and preservation staff. Successful candidates will gain experience working on a variety of tasks, including processing collections to DACS and other relevant archival standards and best practices, publishing collection description in an online finding aid, and promoting collections through the use of Twitter, Wikipedia and newsletter articles.

Positions are available to those with library and archives experience, various language skills, and/or recent graduates or candidates currently enrolled in a graduate program in archival studies, library science, museum studies, history, or a related field. Assistants must commit to work at least 16-24 hours a week between 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday for one year OR work 40 hours per week between 8am-5pm for 6 months.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Outreach & Instruction Librarian will collaborate with Library Staff and other University colleagues to situate the Laurance S. Rockefeller Library as a key partner in student learning at CIIS.  This position will partner with Faculty as an academic program liaison and coordinate the Library’s outreach and engagement efforts for both undergraduate and graduate students.  They will be an integral member of the reference staff and provide online and in-person reference support, as well as in-class information literacy instruction.  Additionally, they will help develop research guides, tutorials, workshops and other educational materials, and participate generally in the development, delivery, and assessment of services that support the teaching, learning and research needs of the CIIS community in collaboration with other staff librarians and under the supervision of the Library Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Outreach
Develop, distribute, and maintain promotional materials that effectively communicate the Library’s role and services to the CIIS community, in close conjunction with other CIIS departments that engage in outreach, promotion and engagement, including Marketing and Communications and Student Affairs.

With Library Director and Library Office Manager, engage with university colleagues to support campus events and programs including library tours, new student orientations, and open houses.

Coordinate, schedule, and participate in the creation and maintenance of library-related programs and events to engage and empower learners and enhance the overall patron experience in the Library.

Develop tools to assess efficacy of library outreach efforts, and use data to keep programming up to date, relevant, and aligned with the University’s mission.

Instruction
Develop and lead in-class research skills and information literacy instruction, library orientations, and special topic library workshops (in-person and online).

Provide embedded librarianship at intensives, retreats, and cohort weekends as a part of the Reference Team; some evening and weekend work will be required (particularly at the start of each semester).

Reference

Academic Liaison

Work closely with other Library Staff to support course reserves and coordinate instruction requested from assigned programs and departments.

Collection Development

As a function of liaison activities, act as a selector for the subject areas relevant to assigned Programs and Departments, actively curating the collections to be relevant to and aligned with the teaching, learning and research needs of the University.

Instruct customers in the use of library tools, including catalogs, computer databases, bibliographic resources, CD-ROM resources, the internet, and indexes.
May prepare publicity and marketing materials, coordinate the publication of brochures, and coordinate the dissemination of library program publicity.
Participate in community outreach programs and special library programs.
May lead or assist in the preparation of grant proposals and/or the development and management of required documentation for grant funded programs.
Respond to difficult complaints and requests for information from customers.
Attend professional workshops, seminars, and conferences; represent the library on outside committees.
Operate various library-related equipment, information systems, and general office equipment.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other County employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
Adhere to safety policies and procedures.
Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: No professional experience is required.
Training: Master's degree in Library Science.
