The J. Paul Leonard Library at San Francisco State University offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Cataloging and Metadata Librarian position at the rank of Senior Assistant or Associate Librarian beginning July 2020 or sooner.
We seek a colleague who will provide leadership in the development, evaluation, and implementation of cataloging and metadata policies, standards, procedures, and workflows, in coordination with a Head of Collection Management Services (currently vacant position). We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, primary responsibilities, and/or service, through diversity, to the excellence of the academic community.
The J. Paul Leonard Library is a busy, teaching-oriented organization supporting a community of 30,000 students as well as faculty and staff. The library’s collections include more than one million items in all formats, including an extensive collection of online databases and full-text resources. Additionally, the library uses and contributes to Ex Libris’ Alma/Primo library management system, which is shared by all 23 libraries in the California State University (CSU) System. Librarians have full faculty status and are expected to meet faculty requirements for tenure and promotion. The library faculty is committed to providing mentoring and support to tenure-track colleagues. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping to shape the future of the library. Responsibilities
The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will perform original cataloging and complex metadata creation in multiple languages, formats, and time periods. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will lead planning, evaluation, and implementation of metadata and cataloging policies, standards, procedures, and workflows, as well as representing the library in implementing CSU-wide consortial level cataloging policies and procedures such as those related to the shared Ex Libris Alma/Primo Unified Library Management System (ULMS). The person in this position will work closely with the faculty and staff in the Collection Management Services division, with the possibility of providing lead work direction.
Qualifications
Required-
● ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent
● Two years of cataloging/metadata experience
● Demonstrated working knowledge of RDA, AACR2, DCRM(b), LCCS, LCSH, and MARC formats and standards
● Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with a diverse population of colleagues and library stakeholders; incorporate inclusion, diversity, and equity into primary assignment, scholarship, and/or service responsibilities; contribute to a supportive, and collaborative work environment
Preferred-
• Experience cataloging using the OCLC bibliographic utility
• Experience using a library services platform, preferably Ex Libris’ Alma
• Demonstrated experience cataloging special collections materials, serials, music, and
manuscripts in English and preferably other languages as well
• Current awareness of new trends and emerging technologies in cataloging and technical services
• Excellent analytical and pro-active problem solving, organizational, and project management skills
• Ability to work independently and as a member or leader of a team
• Ability to adapt to rapid change and to exercise creativity and initiative
• Awareness and engagement with critical concerns in the discipline
• Active involvement in professional development activities
• Demonstrated potential for meeting the requirements for tenure and promotion under the Library's criteria for professional performance, scholarship, and service.
