JOB PURPOSE
The David Rumsey Map Center (The Center) and Stanford Libraries is seeking a three-fourth time Assistant Rare Map Librarian to provide outreach and manage projects related to the Center. The Center’s collections include the David Rumsey Map Collection, Maps of Africa, Glen McLaughlin’s collection of Maps of California as an Island, and other historic maps and atlases. The Center is a world class facility that collocates physical items and their digital surrogates allowing researchers to display and interrogate them in multiple ways adding unique value to the scholarship of cartographic material. The Center boasts large high resolution video walls, a touch screen and Oculus rifts as well and a flexible space to support its programs and has one of the highest number of maps available online in high resolution in the world. In addition to being a teaching and event space, the Center has large areas to display maps and atlases in which two map related exhibitions are mounted a year. The Center is deeply engaged in collecting, cataloging, scanning, and providing access to the rare physical items and its digital collections in interesting and innovative ways.
The person in this public facing position will work closely with the Head of the Center to leverage its technology to teach classes and workshops, support research, and run the exhibition program at the Center. He or she will work with other geospatial and map staff to bring to light new and existing collections for use by scholars at Stanford and beyond. The incumbent will work closely with the Head to stay abreast of trends in cartographic information and will be a forward thinking, technologically savvy individual that is willing to partner with his or her colleagues to experiment with non-traditional ways of incorporating cartographic knowledge in the academy.
CORE DUTIES
● Teach classes, workshops, lead tours and/or give demonstrations of the Center’s resources.
● Create and develop bibliographic, reference and display tools such as topic guides and digital exhibits as assigned.
● Assist patrons and staff with reference and research inquiries by searching shelves, files and electronic resources including staffing the reference desk.
● Under the direction of the Head, and with the help of the Technology Specialist, design and run the physical and digital exhibition program.
● To participate, along with his or her colleagues, in looking beyond traditional fields of study to discover, experiment, prototype and bring to fruition new and innovative ways to incorporate cartographic information in scholarship.
● To continually seek out knowledge of new and emerging technology that could be adapted for leveraging cartographic information.
● Assist in the coordination and running of the Center’s events, including conferences.
● Act as the liaison between the Center and the Conservation Department to ensure a successful conservation program of the Center’s rare materials.
● To supervise hourly and student staff.
● Other projects as assigned by the Head.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience:
Advanced Degree in Library Science or advanced degree in a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
● Demonstrated background in outreach, teaching, or public service.
● Evidence of successful project management skills.
● Well versed in digital librarian skills and new technologies that can leverage the Center’s existing and future physical and digital resources.
● Knowledge of relevant aspects of library operations including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends and emerging technologies.
● High level of proficiency using PC-based applications (Windows and Mac, word processing, spreadsheets) and other computer applications (email, Internet, Integrated Library Systems, web authoring software); high level computer competency kept up to date through continuous learning.
● Excellent analytical and problem solving skills combined with attention to detail for complex, detail-oriented work.
● Evidence of independent work, as a team member, and across departmental boundaries in a fast-paced environment.
● Friendly, personable and willing to work directly with the public.
● Background working with maps or spatial data (desired).
● Knowledge of GIS software and applications and storytelling tools (desired).
● Experience and familiarity with best practices in the handling of rare materials (desired).
Physical Requirements*:
Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:
May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evenings and weekends.
