The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library seeks an energetic, innovative, and collaborative librarian to provide leadership in the area of instruction strategy. Under the general guidance of the Faculty Director for Instruction and User Services, the Instruction Strategy Librarian will develop, deliver, and evaluate library instruction modules and programs in support of the university’s teaching and research activities. This position ensures that the library’s instructional practices support the university’s educational mission. The position requires a working knowledge of pedagogical theories and the capacity to apply that knowledge in collaboration with librarians, library staff, and disciplinary faculty throughout the SJSU colleges and units. The Instruction Strategy Librarian should possess demonstrated teaching ability, knowledge of, and a strong commitment to the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards and Framework for Information Literacy as well as knowledge of current instructional and educational technologies. As a faculty member, the incumbent engages in library and university governance and scholarship, which includes research, scholarly, and creative activities required for tenure and promotion. The Instruction Strategy Librarian will serve as a liaison to subject area(s), as assigned.

Responsibilities


  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmatic library instruction in support of information literacy and critical thinking learning outcomes.
  • Lead the development and assessment of broad-based library instruction materials that can be used by faculty.
  • Collaborate with library colleagues to systematically design, assess, and integrate instructional modules into library activities.
  • Collaborate with SJSU faculty and librarian liaisons to develop and integrate library instructional modules into courses.
  • Help library colleagues to identify, evaluate, and apply technologies essential to the design and delivery of in-person and online instructional services using instructional design expertise and research on student learning.
  • Maintain knowledge of emerging trends, best practices, and pedagogical principles, including but not limited to the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
  • Develop, guide, and evaluate the planning, implementation, and assessment of all information literacy and instruction activities and work closely with colleagues to craft a comprehensive instruction program.
  • Provide professional development opportunities for library colleagues in improving the design and delivery of curriculum-aligned, pedagogically sound, technology-appropriate information literacy learning experiences.
  • Extend the library's reach by delivering and customizing resources into the learning management system.
  • Facilitate and provide observation and coaching on library instruction.
  • Develop, maintain, and report/disseminate statistical and other information related to the library’s instructional activities.
  • Coordinate and oversee any necessary training for use of instructional facilities and equipment.
  • Builds a record of progressive scholarly and professional achievement to fulfill the University requirement of retention, tenure, and promotion.
  • Participates in the library liaison program, providing services to assigned departments.

Required Qualifications


  • Master's degree from an ALA accredited program or equivalent is required at time of appointment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations, as gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching or other comparable experiences, for the provision of user-centered services, systems and programs.
  • Evidence of potential to maintain an ongoing program of scholarly research and professional development at appropriate levels.
  • Experience and/or coursework in developing and evaluating information literacy/instructional programs.
  • Experience and/or coursework incorporating current and emerging technologies into instructional and informational services.
  • Experience and/or coursework in instructional technology and design.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Demonstrated ability to provide meaningful feedback on information literacy and instructional delivery
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, design, implement, and assess comprehensive information literacy programs
  • Demonstrated ability to create instructional aids and digital learning objects to improve information literacy understanding
  • Demonstrated ability to apply instructional design principles to improve teaching and learning
  • Experience in assessment to ensure continuous evaluation and improvement.
