Job Description Summary   

Under supervision, the Senior Library Technician performs a wide range of paraprofessional technical and clerical functions in cataloging, acquisitions, inventorying, collection maintenance, and overseeing circulation operations. Incumbent is responsible for performing work at a high paraprofessional level and expected to exercise independent judgment in the applications of established procedures.

Monday – Thursday 11:30am – 8:00pm
Friday – 7:30am – 4:00pm
Hours may vary depending on the hours of operation for the library.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide circulation, reserve, and collection services to patrons using the library’s automated information systems, including checking out library materials, responding to general information questions, and answering questions regarding loan periods, fines, recalls, claims, holds, shelving, borrowing and library policies.

• Collect and maintain accurate records of overdue/late fines and payments.

• Interview and recommend student workers for hire in circulations; train and supervise student workers in the performance of routine duties; and arrange and prepare students’ work schedules and time cards.

• Perform copy and fast-add cataloging for reserved materials.

• Assist Librarian in cataloging and processing materials for the general collections, using Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and other databases for cataloging copy; input bibliographic data in library’s automated online library system.

• Operate a variety of office equipment and PCs.

• Perform routine clerical tasks, such as opening and distributing mail, photocopying, collecting and compiling statistics, files, and typing correspondences.

• Prepare purchase orders for library materials; verify and correct discrepancies, and monitor fund allotments and depletions.

• Check accuracy of invoices ensuring records accurately reflects purchase order requests.

• Correspond with vendors regarding claims, credits, and incomplete or duplicate shipments.

• Access new material and maintain permanent, organized records of all new acquisitions.

• Sort, shelve, and inventory materials. This includes periodic shelf reading and moves of material to make optimum use of space.

• Assist in preparing basic subject guides and help aids.

• Closes and secures the library in the evening.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications   


1. Three (3) years of technical library experience or an equivalent combination of training, education and qualifying experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
2. Applicant must have demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff, faculty, and students.

Desirable Qualifications   


• Proficiency with a personal computer along with word processing, spreadsheet and database management software programs (e.g., MS Office Suite, MS Word, Excel and Access).

• Knowledge of the Library of Congress cataloging and filing systems and the new technologies used in libraries.

• Experience with computerized on-line library catalogs.

• Library Technician’s Certificate or Degree.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and good organizational skills.

• Ability to handle a substantial volume of repetitive work.

• Ability to maintain financial and statistical records
