EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Under direction, manages and provides leadership for a neighborhood library or a main library department; performs complex library or a main library department; performs complex library work; assigns, supervises and reviews the work of professional and non-professional staff; trains and develops staff; manages contracts with outside vendors; uses the automated library systems and electronic resources, including the internet; selects book and other materials and manages budgets; catalogs materials; performs community outreach functions; plans and prepares programming and talks to the community; develops and maintains the collection for relevancy and currency; performs reference work; assists and advises readers in the selection of materials; prepares reading lists bibliographies and special indexes; prepares regular and special statistical and narrative reports; oversees facility maintenance, upgrades and special projects; assists managers in implementation of library policies, services and budget decisions; researches, recommends, and implements changes; may oversee system-wide services and performs other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE:
       A Master's Degree in Library Services (MLS) or Library Information Science (MLIS) from an American Library Association accredited college (proof required)*
       Three years increasingly responsible professional librarian experience, including one-years of supervision or lead responsibility for professional or technical staff in a library.  For automated Services positions, experience in cataloging, acquisitions, contract management and/or working with automated library systems is required.
       A working knowledge of management principles and techniques, including budgeting, employee supervision, communication and team building.
       Ability to manage and supervise in a changing library environment; effectively relate to a multicultural, multiethnic population and effectively utilize computers, Internet, databases, Windows and library software, including word and Excel as used in a library setting.
       Willingness to work shift assignments in different locations and work evenings and weekends.  
A valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.  If required, a current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at time of selection interview.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience with cataloging, acquisitions, contract management, library automation, youth, technical services, programming, archives, outreach, seniors, and the disabled; and bilingual skill in English/Spanish or English/Southeast Asian language.

SELECTION PROCEDURE: This examination will be conducted using the continuous, non-competitive procedure.  All applicants meeting the requirements to file will be placed on the eligible list, with those receiving Veterans' Credit first, and then in the order in which applications were filed.  Eligible lists may be established periodically.  Completed applications received by January 10, 2014 will be considered for placement on the first eligible list.

The purpose of this supplemental application is to derive more specific information about your qualifications for Department Librarian. This form, along with the required application packet, will serve as the basis for qualifying candidates for placement on the eligible list and must be completed and returned to the Civil Service Department by 4:30 p.m., February 14, 2014. Resumes will be accepted but will not be evaluated as part of the Civil Service screening process. Proof of required documents must be uploaded to the online application or included with a paper application at time of filing. If you are interested in a position in Automated Services, please describe your experience including, but not limited to, cataloging, classification, acquisitions, website tools, integrated library systems, discovery systems and electronic resources. Finally, please list current or previous vendors you have worked with and briefly describe your familiarity with databases and any other online library subscriptions

Are you interested in positions in Youth Services, including teens?

If you are interested in a position in Youth Services, please describe your experience with children's and teen services including, but not limited to, reference, program, grant writing, centralized collection development, technology-based programming and outreach. Please provide direct and systems wide experience including centralized services. Also include information on providing youth services programs and services that are technology based and the technology used.
