Position Description
San Diego State University (SDSU) Library & Information Access seeks applications and nominations of dynamic, innovative, and service-oriented candidates for the position of Catalog Librarian, to be appointed at the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian. This is a full-time, twelve-month, tenure track faculty position.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide original and complex copy cataloging in a contemporary MARC-based environment according to national, consortial, and local standards;
  • Catalog Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) materials, primarily, but also assist with cataloging other materials when needed. Special collections materials are published and unpublished items including rare books and serials, maps, ephemera, audiovisual materials, music, and manuscripts, in multiple languages, formats and time periods;
  • Work closely colleagues within Technical Services and SCUA to establish cataloging priorities and projects for special collections materials;
  • Provide training, oversight, and guidance to paraprofessional staff performing copy-cataloging of SCUA materials;
  • Maintain flexibility and serve the Library’s expert resource for cataloging issues;
  • Maintain high quality of local cataloging and contributions to consortial and national databases, by staying current with national and international cataloging standards, developments and trends, with special collections issues, and with librarianship;
  • Participate in the shared governance of San Diego State University by serving on library, campus-wide, and California State University committees as needed;
  • Participate in professional development activities to demonstrate a continuous and meritorious record of contributions and achievements in the profession;
  • Other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree or equivalent foreign degree;
  • Minimum two years of cataloging experience demonstrating substantial, advanced work with a variety of materials and formats, preferably in an academic or research library;
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of RDA, DCRM(b), LCCS, LCSH, and MARC formats and standards;
  • Demonstrated understanding of current issues and emerging developments within the national cataloging environment, in particular, and within librarianship, in general;
  • Experience cataloging using the OCLC bibliographic utility;
  • Experience using a library resource management system, preferably Ex Libris’ Alma;
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player in maintaining harmonious, cooperative working relationships with staff, faculty, and administrators;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, particularly the ability to explain complex concepts to a wide variety of people in individual and group settings;
  • A demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity;
  • Potential for meeting SDSU’s requirements for tenure and promotion based on library service, professional growth, and service to the University and community.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated, effective cataloging experience working within a shared consortial system, preferably an academic or research environment;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of database maintenance issues in an academic library resource management system and discovery interface;
  • Demonstrated experience cataloging special collections materials, serials or music (preferably classical music);
  • Thorough, up-to-date familiarity with policies of national cataloging programs as NACO, SACO or CONSER;
  • Active involvement in professional development activities with a record of contributions and achievements in the profession;
  • Working knowledge of at least one foreign language;
  • Graduate degree in a subject field other than librarianship.
