PHYSICAL DEMANDS


Read print and computer screens.

Lift material weighing 15 or more pounds and pass material across counters up to 40" in height. Move, load, and unload book trucks weighing up to 600 pounds.

Shelve and retrieve material from stacks 5"-84" in height for extended periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT


This Night & Weekend Assistant position works primarily at Blaisdell Medical Library in Sacramento. This position may be required to work at any of the University Library facilities as needed. Description of the primary location will vary depending upon whichever facility is the primary location of work.

Work Schedule: Employee and supervisor will negotiate on a fixed schedule at the start of employment. There may be exceptional circumstances in which this work schedule will need to accommodate departmental needs. Hours worked include, but are not limited to: weekends, holidays, finals, intersession, and summer sessions.

Must substitute for Night and Weekend staff for planned and unplanned absences. Must be available for staff meetings during daytime hours.

Frequent interaction with patrons and staff; communicate in person, by telephone, and electronically.

QUALIFICATIONS


Required:


Library operations and practices work experience in an academic library public service setting (Facilities/Security, Circulation, Reference, Personnel, Stacks Maintenance, Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Services).

Interpersonal and communication skills to successfully interact with a diverse patron and staff population. Effectively explain complex policies; remain calm and exercise tact and compassion when dealing with difficult individuals.

Experience functioning as a work leader; training, directing, evaluating, and motivating others.

Organizational skills to work independently and follow established processes and priorities; flexibility to manage rapid priority changes and adjust workflow to meet deadlines.

Analytical skills to determine solutions while maintaining compliance with established policies/guidelines. Problem resolution and policy exception granting/refusal experience. Experience responding to emergencies and unusual situations, applying good judgment with appropriate incident management and/or referral.

Experience operating automated library systems, catalogs, and other library-related databases. Bibliographic skills.

Electronic communication and MS Office experience, including Word, Excel, and Access.

Math skills sufficient to compile statistics, perform calculations, interpret and analyze data.

Skills to operate and troubleshoot standard office/library equipment.

Writing skills to compose clear and concise professional documents and communications.

Preferred:


Knowledge of applicable University policies and procedures with skills to interpret, articulate and apply Unit/Library/University policy, procedure and practice to patrons/staff, and make appropriate referrals for optimal service.

Skill to work cooperatively as a contributing member of a team to establish unit goals; plan, organize and implement unit procedures to achieve goals; and back-up co-workers during staffing shortages and heavy workload periods.

Knowledge of Library of Congress (LC) and/or National Library of Medicine (NLM) classification systems.
