The Library is seeking an innovative and energetic Director to lead our Teaching, Learning, and Research Support (TLRS) division in providing instructional and consultation services, scholarly information resources(SIR), and research support to students, faculty, and staff. The Director will develop and oversee public services designed to enhance the academic experience of the Oxy community. The incumbent will be people-centered, responsive, creative, and skilled in leading a team of professional librarians in a highly collaborative setting. Employing a deep commitment to diversity, equity, justice, inclusivity, and universal design concepts and methodologies, the Director of TLRS will develop active learning experiences both online and in person, in large groups and small, in ways that resonate with the philosophy and values of a select, residential liberal arts college located in a large urban center.

Reporting to the College Librarian, the Director of TLRS will join the Library Leadership Team (LiLT), oversee and manage the division’s budget and operations, and lead a team of four librarians focused on

Academic Technology, Arts and Humanities, First Year Experience and Student Success, and Science. The incumbent will plan, organize, manage, and assess the Library’s robust four-year Information Literacy Instruction (ILI) program; oversee the TLRS librarians’ engagement in providing access to SIR; and facilitate their participation in Scholarly Communications and developing learning technologies.

The Director of TLRS will serve as the Library’s liaison to the College’s Social Sciences’ departments, disciplines, and interdisciplinary programs, providing subject expertise and content specialization, teaching ILI, and selecting SIR. The Social Sciences portfolio at Oxy includes interdisciplinary programs such as Black Studies; Critical Theory and Social Justice; Food Studies; Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies; Latinx and Latin American Studies; and Urban and Environmental Policy, in addition to traditional disciplines, such as Diplomacy and World Affairs; Economics; History; Politics; Psychology; and Sociology.

RESPONSIBILITIES

TLRS Leadership & Management

 Serves as a member of LiLT, representing the TLRS division

 Plans, organizes, staffs, and leads the TLRS division, directly supervising instructional librarians and academic technologists. Develops and assesses division goals and priorities

 Develops and manages the TLRS operational budget. Plays a collaborative role in developing the Library’s materials budget to ensure access to SIR and curricular alignment

 Works closely with the College Librarian and other members of LiLT on Library facilities renovation and improvement projects designed to further student success and excellence

 Works closely with the Director of SIR and the Director of User Services, Communications, and Assessment (DUSCA) to review usage data and SIR policies in relation to curricular needs. Oversees instructional librarian liaison roles in the evaluation and selection of SIR

 Builds productive relationships with faculty across disciplines to continually align services, resources, and programs with curricular needs

 Aligns teaching, learning, and research support with college-wide learning goals and ensures that programs advance the college’s mission of Equity and Justice

 Serves on campus committees when needed

 Actively represents the library in professional associations devoted to TLRS at the national, regional, and local levels; maintains currency with new, emerging, and established standards and best practices in the field; shares knowledge and expertise within the division and with other colleagues

Information Literacy Instruction, Public Services, and Liaison Work

 Plans, organizes, implements, and assesses the Library’s ILI program for students across all disciplines and years. Supports and mentors librarians in developing instructional materials, workshops, and research support programs

 Oversees the provision of one-on-one research consultations, online guides, and resources for self-paced learning and support across all disciplines to help students conduct effective research with successful outcomes

 Collaborates with the DUSCA to assess, communicate, and promote TLRS services. Evaluates and continuously improves the online user experience

 Organizes outreach for workshops and orientations with academic and student affairs programs, such as Campus Tours and Orientations, the Multicultural Summer Institute, the Undergraduate Research Center Summer Program, and the Writing Center

 Serves as the Library’s liaison to Social Sciences departments, disciplines, and interdisciplinary programs, providing subject expertise and content specialization. Works closely with other TLRS team members to ensure coverage of all subject areas across the curriculum and accessibility to SIR for faculty, staff, and students

 Works closely with the Director of Special Collections and College Archives to support teaching, learning, and research through resource acquisitions and teaching with primary sources.

Scholarly Communications & Learning Technologies

 Identifies, evaluates, and facilitates innovative applications of academic technology in support of inclusive and equitable teaching, learning, and research

 Facilitates user support for academic technologies and scholarly communications platforms, such as the course management system, digital archive, and institutional repository

 Develops expertise on intellectual property rights pertaining to academic pursuits and scholarly communications with a view to becoming a key point-of-contact for the campus

 Collaborates with the DUSCA in managing the Critical Making Studio, supporting student assistants’ training, and facilitating tech lending

 Collaborates with the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Center for Research and Scholarship to offer training and support for faculty in digital pedagogy and research, open access publishing, and open educational resources

 Collaborates with Information Technology Services to ensure sustainable infrastructures for teaching and learning technologies

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

 MLIS from an ALA accredited program, or earned doctorate, or its equivalent in work experience, education, and training

 Three years of professional experience in public services in an academic or research library

 An exciting vision for supporting teaching, learning, and research in a liberal arts curriculum

The Library is seeking an innovative Science Librarian to join our Teaching, Learning, and Research Support (TLRS) team.

The Science Librarian facilitates the use of information resources and technology in teaching, learning, and scholarship for faculty, students, and staff. Reporting to the Director of TLRS, the Science Librarian will interact closely with colleagues, faculty, and students in providing information literacy instruction sessions, research consultations, training on effective uses of educational technology, and scholarly communication. RESPONSIBILITIES

● Collaborates directly with mathematics, natural sciences, and physical sciences faculty members to realize the College’s and individual departments’ teaching, learning, and research goals; participates in related grants and other funding opportunities; and informs assessments of student learning

● Researches and implements best practices in digital pedagogy and instructional design in the sciences. Under the direction of a supervisor or director, provides students, faculty, staff, and community members' access to and instruction for using a variety of library and learning resources equipment and resources; assists in the processing, organization, and circulation of cataloged materials.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES


Assists in the development and implementation of library policies and procedures to promote efficient operations of the library (including those related to circulation, reserve, periodicals, interlibrary loan, acquisitions, computer labs and federal copyright laws.) Maintains currency on library policies and procedures. Interprets policies and procedures for library personnel or patrons. Maintains procedural manuals and files as directed.

Analyzes library-related problems and takes appropriate action. Resolves patron conflicts and issues. Informs management as needed. Maintains a safe environment and enforces rules of conduct.

Monitors the physical organization of library materials and spaces of an assigned Library and Learning Resources area. Assists with the administration of study room sign up systems. Develops and maintains patron instructions for copiers, network printing systems, and print card dispensers.

THE POSITION

POSITION PURPOSE:


Under the general description of the Library Services State Manager, incumbent will copy catalog, prepare original descriptive catalog records from existing templates, and support the maintenance of accurate catalog records for physical and electronic materials. The incumbent catalogs physical and electronic materials, such as monographs, government documents and audiovisual materials. In addition, the Library Services Specialist serves as the primary copy cataloger for federal, state, and government documents collection in both print and electronic formats and collaborates on related projects, such as weeding and physical processing and other duties as assigned.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


A. CATALOGING


  • Copy cataloging and coordinating original cataloging with Cataloging Librarian (when no bibliographic record exists) of physical resources including print (monographs and periodicals), audio, visual, mixed media kits and equipment. Materials to be cataloged may have been purchased, deposited, donated or placed on reserve.
  • Working with other Library Services staff, and librarians, to maintain material records in any and all phases of the material lifecycle.
  • Copy cataloging, and working with the Government Documents Coordinator, to maintain the physical and electronic Government Documents collection.
  • Forwarding cataloged materials to student assistant for physical processing and fulfillment of item requests or deaccession as needed.
  • Supporting Archival staff by cataloging materials for special collections. 
  • Training student assistant to physically prepare physical materials for shelving, and fulfilment of requests.  Writing and updating procedures assigned to student assistant as well as associated workflows, monitoring quality of work, and reviewing tasks as required.
  • Regularly reviewing workflow procedures relating to items which require repair or other action taken

B. ACQUISITIONS SUPPORT AND PERIODICALS


  • Supporting Acquisitions staff by searching purchase requests to avoid duplication of resources, importing bibliographic records or creating brief records, and creating purchase order lines.
  • Upon receipt of ordered materials, editing or replacing brief records with complete bibliographic records as needed, completing item details and updating holdings.
  • Updating serial bibliographic records and holdings in response to title changes, cessations, or when subscription cancelled.
  • Updating and closing purchase order lines as required. Communicate such changes with appropriate staff and librarians.

C. CHECK OUT DESK DUTIES


  • Circulating library materials CSUB and CSU+ collection as well as ILL.
  • Answering general library services and directional questions
  • Contacting Admin, Help-Desk or other CSUB departments as required to resolve issues
  • Creating Community member accounts
  • Assisting with library opening and closing procedures as required including counting cash and securing building

JOB SUMMARY


This position performs difficult specialized duties of a paraprofessional nature in 2 core areas of the Law Library’s operation. These 2 areas include: (1) Independent responsibility for all administrative and procedural tasks associated with the preparation and exporting of payment files to KFS using Alma, the library’s integration library system, and BigSys, and (2) Establishes working procedures for managing the Library’s serials subscriptions, both print and online, which account for 80% of the Library’s current titles, and $800,000 in annual expenditures. The Position


The Library Support Specialist involves paraprofessional work related to assisting library patrons in the use of a College and countywide network of libraries, library resources, related services, and activities. Under direction, the employee assists librarians and other faculty in providing technical electronic and direct information to library patrons about policies, procedures, circulation services, online access, database resources, fees, returns, and other information. The Library Support Specialist provides assistance to library patrons in an open-access library lab and/or with other library-based computer-mediated resources. The employee also maintains the confidentiality of the databases for library patrons. Public contact is extensive and involves students, staff, the general public, vendors, other educational institutions, community, and business representatives to exchange information related to library access and resource availability. A high degree of independent judgment and creativity are required to select from alternate and often conflicting solutions to resolve a variety of minor and occasional major problems that arise. Consequences of errors in judgment can be costly in public relations, employee and customer time. A Library Support Specialist can monitor the work of clerical and other staff, library interns, and student assistants.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Exchanges information with students, staff, the general public, other educational institutions, vendors, collection agencies, interlibrary loan services, public library, and other personnel regarding countywide and College library services, resources, on-site services, billing, fees, returns, database accessibility, policies, and procedures
  • Refers library patrons to electronic, community, and other resources for technical assistance as appropriate
  • Confers with librarians and other staff to plan short- and long-range service delivery models, including the development of new materials
  • Attends workshops, meetings, and other events to obtain current information
  • Serves on various library-related committees
  • Participates in library tours, orientation programs, and other public relations activities
  • Staffs a major section of the College library, in conjunction with librarians
  • Catalogs items (print and non-print items, books, periodicals, instructor’s reserve materials) into the library’s collections
  • Provides assistance to library patrons in an open-access laboratory and/or with other library-based computer-mediated resources in locating and using requested media, referrals to appropriate staff to obtain technical information, and to collect and document the payment of fees, fines, and other transactions
  • Performs inventory and media searches
  • Plans and prepares exhibits and displays in conjunction with librarians and other staff
  • Makes recommendations for the acquisition of new media, resource materials, and/or software
  • Interprets, modifies, and verifies bibliographic and other documentation
  • Assigns bar codes to all cataloged items and enters them on the bibliographic record
  • Prepares bibliographies and acquisition lists
  • Performs copy cataloging and related technical services
  • Receives and organizes a variety of materials to be returned to library shelves, transferred to other sites, added to the collection, or discarded
  • Orders, purchases and subscribes to numerous print and non-print materials, including books, equipment, computers, government documents, serials, media, and all supplies
  • Trains and monitors the work of clerical and other staff, library interns, and student assistants as assigned
  • Enters, modifies, and retrieves information using a variety of computer software
  • Sets up and maintains detailed payment records and holds, and statistical, financial, and other records to monitor and track library usage, cataloging, and availability of book, periodical, and non-print resources
  • Uses a variety of computer software to compose and prepare correspondence, memoranda, special and regular reports, bulletins, surveys, text, and formatting of website information and other written materials
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree plus library work experience or an Associate degree in Library Science and successful library experience of increasing responsibility that has included demonstrated knowledge of technical library services, resources, and technology OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Successful complex clerical experience of increasing responsibility
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
  • Skill in computer data entry, modification, and retrieval, including the use of a database for a variety of record-keeping and reporting
  • Demonstrated skills in written and oral communication
  • Experience with training and leading the work of others
