The Position


The College seeks a full-time, tenure track faculty member for an Equity, Outreach, and Engagement Librarian. The ideal candidate will share the College’s commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. This position requires self-direction, flexibility, the ability to work well with others as part of a team, and the ability to adapt to a rapidly-changing library, teaching, and learning environment. This position is a valued part of the team of librarians, staff, and library workers who are continuing to grow and learn in their equity-minded practices. This position reports directly to the Director of the Learning Commons.

Start date of this assignment: Fall 2022.


Duties and Responsibilities


  • The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position.   • The Librarian will provide equity-minded vision and leadership in the development, assessment, and continuous improvement of the library’s collections, reference services, and information literacy instruction program
  • Engage with CSM’s diverse learning communities through outreach, instruction, and curricular development with student success initiatives (e.g., first-generation college student programs, Guided Pathways, free college initiatives), and design equity-informed library programming and services to meet their needs
  • Engage with the CSM community to improve campus awareness of critical open education/access issues (e.g., OER, ZTC, and other open access resources)
  • Keep current with trends and developments in equity-oriented and non-traditional student services
  • Lead and participate in library-wide initiatives to examine current practices and strengthen policies that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion goals
  • Teach and assess information literacy in a variety of formats and modalities (e.g., credit-bearing courses, one-shot information literacy instruction sessions, and workshops)
  • Provide reference services in-person and remotely using various communication tools
  • Participate in department/division, College, District, and regional committees as appropriate
  • The College offers day, evening, online, and weekend classes, and librarians may be required to teach or provide services during these times
  • Perform other duties as required by contract and general institutional needs


Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree or above in library science, library and information science, OR the equivalent (see below)

Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

Degree Equivalence


The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.

Academic Background Equivalence


Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.

Professional Achievement Equivalence


The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Reference & Library Instruction


  • Experience developing, teaching, or assessing information literacy instruction and other library instruction for face-to-face or online courses
  • Skills in using various face-to-face and online teaching tools
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including engaging presentation skills
  • Commitment to collaborative learning and working environments
  • Experience working in Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas)
  • Experience creating and using online research guides
  • Knowledge of or skill using strategies to ensure Library accessibility (physical, digital, and educational)
  • Training or experience delivering reference services in face-to-face and online modalities.
  • Equity and Outreach
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to service excellence to a diverse community including a focus on first-generation students, learning communities, or transfer programs that focus on the success of hyper-marginalized student populations
  • Experience with designing equity-informed library programming and services
  • Experience in outreach and marketing to students and faculty with a focus on equity and inclusion
  • Evidence of commitment to the continuous reexamination of library practices and policies to strengthen and advance the diversity, equity, and inclusion goals of the Library and the campus
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders with diverse interests and needs
  • Open Educational Resources (OER)
  • Knowledge of or experience with OER and other textbook affordability strategies and initiatives
  • Experience communicating issues concerning the discovery and use of open textbooks or other open educational resources to diverse constituencies including students, faculty, and administrators
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master’s degree in library science or library information science
  • Experience in outreach and marketing to students and faculty with a focus on equity and inclusion
