Job Description
Under the supervision of a Principal Librarian and under the lead of the Senior Librarian for GPS (Digital Publications), the incumbent serves in a technical services, outreach, and instruction role for the variety of programs and services offered by the digital publications team and the Government Publications Section of the California State Library. This position also provides reference and research services to library patrons.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
35% Technical Services:
Performs original cataloging, copy cataloging, and metadata creation tasks. Assigns accurate subject headings and authority records following professional practices and industry standards for the development of metadata and bibliographic information. Schedules website crawls and creates, assigns, and enriches descriptive metadata for webpages and social media accounts captured by the Government Publications Section to improve searchability and improve discovery of these resources. Assists the Senior Librarian with resolving complex issues with cataloging and metadata creation.
35% Outreach and Instruction:
Provides virtual and in-person instruction for other state agencies and the general public, teaching classes on searching and navigating the California State Library’s collections of digital government documents. Creates written and video tutorials for searching and navigating relevant sources for digital government
publications. Develops social media posts, writes newsletter articles and participates in outreach and marketing campaigns as a representative of the digital publications team.
20% Reference:
Provides reference services to state employees, members of the public, and to other libraries. This service involves in-person, telephone, e-mail, and other online transactions.
5% Digitization:
Assists with technical aspects of the California state and local depository collections and programs.
5% Committees and Special Projects:
Participates in State Library study groups and serves on State Library committees. Provides research and
reports as requested by the librarian supervisor, the Chief of State Library Services, Assistant Chief, and the State Librarian.
