Job Description


Under the general direction of the Supervising Librarian II, the Library Technical Assistant I is responsible for providing access to library materials for the California State Library collections by copy cataloging materials into the State Library database and performing record, collection, and electronic resource maintenance. The incumbent also processes incoming library materials for inclusion in the State Library collection.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


35% Copy Cataloging


Performs cataloging functions in the Library’s Alma integrated library system, including copy cataloging and original templatebased record creation for materials. Searches the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) bibliographic utility for bibliographic records. Creates original or modifies existing bibliographic, holding, and item records according to these established standards:
• Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2) description
• Resource Description and Access (RDA) 
• MARC 21 bibliographic and holdings
• OCLC guidelines
• Local State Library guidelines

30% Receiving and Processing Library Materials


Receives, checks-in, and processes periodicals, continuations, books, newspapers, microfilm, and other library materials. Claims missing issues. Solves check-in problems regarding materials with relevant Technical Services staff when discrepancies arise. Assists with troubleshooting of check-in and claiming tasks, initiates followup action, and updates records as required when responses are received. Communicates with vendors and publishers when discrepancies arise. Returns unwanted materials or incorrect materials. Processes library materials by applying barcodes, spine labels, dust jacket covers, and other tasks as needed to prepare items for use.

20% Record and Collection Maintenance


Updates bibliographic, holding, and item records to accurately reflect library holdings. Participates in shelf reading and retrospective cataloging projects.

5% Electronic Resource Maintenance


Adds, tests, and updates access information about online databases and electronic journals in the library's catalog in support of the Library's Digital First initiatives.

5% Administrative


Participates in Technical Services section meetings and activities. Keeps statistics and reports on cataloging, receiving, and processing activities. Assists in training new employees in the Technical Services section.

5% Marginal Functions


Participates in State Library study groups and serves on StateLibrary committees, especially the committees implementing the Library’s strategic plan. Assists the Supervising Librarian II with
identifying new programs, services, and workflows to support the Library’s Digital First initiatives. Keeps the procedure manual up-todate with current and revised procedures. Gives recommendations to Supervising Librarian II on improved methods of records control.
