Job Description:
Under the supervision of the Principal Librarian, the incumbent coordinates all aspects of collection development and maintenance of California digital government publications at the California State Library. This includes managing programs with external partners, coordinating outreach and training activities, setting big picture acquisitions and program management goals, and working with Government Publications Section (GPS) staff assigned to digital publications tasks. Senior Librarian Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
40% Program and Partnership Management:
Serves as the primary liaison to external programs and partnerships pertaining to digital government document collection development. Maintains contacts with other state agencies and external partners to keep informed of website changes, so that web crawls and other online document collection activities can be timed to capture website updates effectively. Identifies topical areas in need of content curation due to times of rapid information output, like election cycles or natural disasters, to capture rapidly changing digital information and publications posted on state agency websites. Actively monitors for
areas at risk of information loss, such as when a department abruptly removes content from its website or when agencies are reorganized and consolidated. Helps coordinate State Library participation in partnerships designed to advance the preservation of electronic state government documents. Works with the Information Technology Bureau to maintain current content on relevant web pages on the State Library website.
20% Outreach Planning:
Identifies opportunities to build relationships with state agencies and external partners. Plans and provides outreach services to state agencies to increase compliance with the Library Distribution Act. Leads and participates in committees with relevant state and external partners. Develops social media posts, writes newsletter articles and participates in outreach and marketing campaigns as a representative of the digital publications team.
15% Technical Services Supervision:
Trains, assigns tasks to, and reviews work of Librarian and support staff assigned to the digital
government publications team. Team tasks include original cataloging, copy cataloging, and metadata creation. Coordinates the assignment of accurate subject headings and authority records. Ensures adherence to professional practices and industry standards in the development of metadata and bibliographic information. Works with GPS and other State Library staff to resolve complex
issues with cataloging and metadata.
15% Reference:
Provides reference services to state employees, members of the public, and other libraries. This service involves inperson, telephone, e-mail, and other online transactions.
5% Digitization:
Assists with technical aspects of the California state and local depository collections and programs.
5% Committees and Special Projects:
Participates in State Library study groups and serves on State Library committees. Provides research and reports as requested by the librarian supervisor, the Chief of StateLibrary Services, Assistant Chief, and the State Librarian.
