Duties/Responsibilities
The Dean and University
Librarian is a University administrative officer and performs the duties as
assigned by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the University
President. The Dean and University Librarian reports to the Provost and Vice
President for Academic Affairs and serves on the Dean's Council. The Dean and
University Librarian directly supervises the Library Administrative Staff,
Library Systems and IT, Reference, User Services, the Media Center, Special
Collections and University Archives and the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection.
The Dean and University Librarian also is a member of the CSU Council of
Library Deans (COLD) which promotes, plans and implements CSU system-wide
library initiatives. The Dean and University Librarian is the chief
administrative officer and spokesperson for the University Library and
facilitates the development and implementation of a strategic plan, in concert
with the University's strategic plan for service-oriented, forward-looking
Library collections advancing and supporting teaching, learning, research,
scholarly communication and service. The Dean and University Librarian promotes
and advocates on behalf of the Library's collections, resources and services
including through gifts, grants and contracts. As a member of the University's
management team, works cooperatively and effectively with other campus
entities, other library administrators in the region, and in national
professional organizations to support the Library's and University's missions.
Qualifications
- REQUIRED:
- Possession of an ALA-accredited graduate degree in library and information science or equivalent.
- Extensive experience in a university library or comparable library in a substantial and progressive managerial and senior level leadership role.
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including the strong interpersonal skills necessary to interact and work effectively with various campus and external constituencies.
- Substantial evidence of dynamic, innovative leadership and decision-making ability and a strong commitment to service.
- Significant experience with budget and personnel management.
- Evidence of a successful, collaborative style of management and interaction.
- Demonstrated experience generating external funds and gifts and working with donors.
- Sound understanding of the evolving nature and role of collections and their centrality in an academic library environment.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate relevant emerging technologies into library service..
- Understanding of the role of libraries in academic teaching and learning.
- Eligibility for senior appointment to the faculty to be approved by the Library Faculty.
- PREFERRED:
- Earned doctorate and a record of teaching and scholarship.
- Evidence of community involvement and leadership.
- Experience in a collective bargaining environment.
- Experience with library space management or renovation.
- Experience developing projects, activities, or services responsive to changing institutional needs.
Appointment
This position is defined in
the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of The California State University. It is excluded from the collective bargaining
process and is also exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards
Act (FLSA).

The person holding this
position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and
Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth
in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST
This position is a
"designated position" in the California State University's Conflict
of Interest Code. The successful
candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest
forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

This position has been
designated as sensitive and will require a Criminal Background check. We reserve the right to make employment offer
contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background check.
Candidate will be required to
provide official transcripts of their highest degree earned and must furnish
proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.
