Job Description:

The Secretary of State is seeking a full-time, permanent Archivist I who will work in the digital/electronic records program of the State Archives. Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief, Archives Division, the incumbent works cooperatively with staff in the areas of records management and records appraisal to ensure compliance with best practices and statutory and administrative requirements in the statewide management and preservation of electronic records and the preservation of electronic records with enduring historical value, follows standards for the on-going storage, preservation, and management of digital records, assists in the needs-analysis and development of infrastructure for the preservation, management, and dissemination of electronic records, and does other related work. The position is located in downtown Sacramento, near Light Rail, K Street Mall, and other amenities.

Duties: Assists with the development of archival program plans related to appraisal, ingestion, preservation, management, and dissemination of electronic records, assists with drafting and implementing policies and procedures, assists with the work of the Electronic Records Task Force, assists with developing program guidelines and best practices for electronic records, assists with preparing program reports and statistics, assists with presentations to external constituencies, attends professional conferences.

Desirable Qualifications: Knowledge of the organization and history of state government, the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) model, working knowledge of structural, technical, and preservation metadata, and an understanding of the wide variety of digital formats including preservation formats. Knowledge of digital content storage needs, understanding of the techniques for managing and preserving electronic records, effective communication and analytical skills, ability to work independently and in a team environment, ability to effectively manage multiple tasks with changing priorities, ability to meet deadlines, take initiative, be flexible and have the willingness to learn and adapt to various job assignments, and familiarity with information technology concepts and practices.

Who May Apply: Employees who are currently in the Archivist I classification or have current list, transfer or reinstatement eligibility for a permanent, full-time appointment to this classification.
