The City of Lodi is recruiting for the position of Library Assistant. The ideal candidate will be a highly responsible and motivated individual with excellent customer service. DEFINITION
Provide a variety of library customer service and clerical support functions; other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED
Assistants work under general supervision from higher level personnel; may direct the work of part-time or temporary staff.
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Provide a variety of library customer service and clerical support functions.
Verify bibliographic information from a variety of sources for library materials; maintain catalog and other library files; process library materials as needed.
Serve as receptionist; receive and screen callers and visitors; provide information regarding Library procedures to a variety of parties and the general public;
Assist public in the operation and use of library equipment and services;
Process a variety of applications, forms, and records;
Perform related basic computations; enter and retrieve data from computer systems; record and gather information for statistical and other reports;
Assist in the arrangements for onsite library workshops and events
Perform other duties related to the operation of the department and the city, including additional duties that enable the department and City to meet the diverse needs of its community.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of Library terminology; library materials and resources; library functions including acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, and inter-library loan.
Basic office practices and procedures, including operation of standard office equipment and record keeping.
Basic business writing and arithmetic skills. Use of a personal computer.
Ability to provide a variety of library customer service and clerical support functions.
Perform library clerical work; learn the use of appropriate library automation systems and in computer-based activity; sort or file alphabetically and numerically;
Work irregular hours, shifts and weekends;
Perform detailed clerical work accurately; type at a speed necessary for adequate job performance; maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; prioritize work and coordinate several activities simultaneously; organize and maintain accurate records and office files;
Communicate effectively with the public, using excellent customer service skills.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Learn specialized processing, procedures and support tasks;
Use initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines; establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the qualifying knowledge and ability. A typical combination is Education: Equivalent to completion of high school. Associate degree from an accredited community college in Library and Information Technology, or related field is desirable.
Experience
Two years of responsible clerical experience. Library experience is desirable
