THE POSITION

The Napa City-County Library is currently looking to fill two non-benefited Library Associate I (Extra Help) positions.  The eligibility list established from this recruitment will also be used to fill future Library Associate I full-time, part-time and extra help positions.
A Library Associate I performs paraprofessional library duties which include assisting patrons with reference questions, demonstrating the library computer catalog, locating appropriate books and materials and training and scheduling assigned staff including volunteers.  This position may be assigned to Children's Services, Reference or Library Branches as needed.

THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS
The minimum qualification screening is currently scheduled for the week of March 11, 2013.  A review of the candidate's responses to the supplemental application questions will take place the week of March 11, 2013. Applicants who pass the first two steps will be invited to participate in the prescreening interviews tentatively set for the week of March 18, 2013.  Human Resources reserves the right to make changes to the recruitment process and schedule at any time.


EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Assist library patrons in the selection of appropriate library materials and use of library facilities; provide customer service for library patrons, including answering reference questions; assist patrons with the use of the computer catalog and library computers; locate appropriate books and materials; provide reading suggestions based upon patron age and interests; monitor proper library behavior and safety within the Library; interact in a friendly and respectful manner with all Library patrons; assist in book selection and collection maintenance; annotate and review new books; plan and conduct book talks and related events; and, operate a personal computer for the purpose of entering and retrieving information.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE OF:

Library computer software to maintain library patron records and requests.

The English alphabet in order to alphabetize library books and materials.
The Dewey decimal system used in shelving and locating library books and materials.
Telephone techniques that will ensure exceptional customer service.
Library terminology and standard library practices and techniques.

Manual and automated library information systems.

Specific rules, regulations and processes of the library and their applications.

SKILL TO:

Use a personal computer for research, communication, material selection and website maintenance.

Use an automated library information storage and retrieval system.

Perform reference work.

Communicate and convey instructions to staff and patrons.

Monitor proper library behavior and safety.

Learn, apply and explain library policies, procedures and processes.

Follow verbal and written instructions to complete routine assignments.

Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Interact in a friendly and respectful manner with all Library Patrons.

ABILITY TO:

Lift and carry up to 25 pounds.

Stand for extended periods of up to 2 hours.

Work using a full range of body movements including reaching, bending and grasping.

Prioritize and multi-task in a busy environment.

Work nights and weekends.

License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONTo qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A desirable combination is:

Experience: 
Four years of library experience, including at least two years of paraprofessional library experience.

Education:Equivalent to completion of two years of college.

OR

Experience:
Two years of paraprofessional library experience.

Education:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
