Position Overview: The Water Resources Collections and Archives, University of California Riverside, is seeking a creative, dynamic librarian to assume responsibility for further development of digital initiatives and technical services functions of the WRCA. The WRCA is a world class collection of unique current and historical information about water resources in California and the West. WRCA provides services in support of UCR’s academic programs; as well as information services to all other campuses in the University of California system; and to the California water community. The Water Resources Collections and Archives is both an archives and a library that is recognized throughout the United States as the premier collection of its kind.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director and Department Head of the WRCA the successful candidate will be responsible for expanding and managing the existing digital content of the collection (eScholarship, Web Archiving Service, Encoded Archival Description, e.g.); managing the technical services functions of the collection, including engaging directly in the cataloging of materials that require original cataloging, and working collaboratively with the UCR Metadata and Technical Services Department. Additional responsibilities include participating in collection development; providing public and research services to a diverse clientele; and processing archival collections or supervising support staff in all of the functions mentioned above. Currently a digital platform is being considered by the Libraries to enhance state-wide, national, and international access to these unique resources. Under the general supervision of the WRCA Director and Department Head, specific responsibilities include:
  • Maintain, manage, and expand existing WRCA digital content using ContentDM and eScholarship or similar technologies.
  • Maintain and expand WRCA’s online collection guides in the Online Archive of California (OAC) and create and upload digital content as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of new digital and preservation initiatives within UC and nationally and adopt, if appropriate, for use by WRCA.
  • Use current cataloging standards (AACR2/RDA) as interpreted by the Library of Congress and assign subject access utilizing LC Subject Headings to catalog original digital material using ContentDM.
  • Serve as a resource for the UCR cataloging department as needed and respond to inquiries about WRCA’s unique classification scheme and/or other cataloging questions pertaining to print publications.
  • Participate with the Director and Department Head in collection development by identifying new material to be acquired for the current collection and collaborating in identifying archival materials to be acquired.
  • Participate in the provision of reference and research services, which may include in-person reference desk service, research appointments, and digital reference, instruction and orientation classes.
  • Manage and participate in processing archival collections as needed according to accepted processing standards and create and edit Encoded Archival Description (EAD) files.
  • Oversee student personnel in a variety of tasks.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director and Department Head, other library department heads, librarians and staff on cross-departmental projects and planning.


Required Qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent degree;
  • Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible library experience;
  • Minimum of 1 year previous experience in cataloging original materials using AACR2, LC Subject Headings and MARC coding; working with an integrated library system and with a national bibliographic utility (i.e. OCLC, RLIN);
  • Excellent understanding of current and emerging technologies as they contribute to information management and meeting the needs of students, faculty and researchers;
  • Demonstrated experience with digitization projects, metadata, and related standards;
  • Working knowledge of archival processing and creation and editing of EAD files;
  • Aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail;
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work effectively, independently and collaboratively as part of a team;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in an ethnically and culturally diverse environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in project management, supervision, providing reference and research services in an academic or special library setting, and working with an integrated library information system experience in collection development, working with blogs, wikis and social networking sites; interest in or knowledge of California water infrastructure. Clear evidence of flexibility and collegiality. UCR librarians are members of the Librarians Association of the University of California (LAUC). Research, publication, and/or service to the University and profession are expected for continuing advancement. This position is represented by the University Council – American Federation of Teachers.

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range of $48,504 - $62,220 Appointment at Assistant Librarian II to Associate Librarian V rank depending upon qualifications and experience. Excellent retirement system, health, and vacation benefits.
