Job Title: Library Director The Library Director of the Dixon Public
Library District (herein after “Library”) is the administrator responsible for system-wide
planning and budget development for a one-site district library, which serves a population of over
25,000 residents in the city of Dixon, California and the surrounding area. The Director oversees
daily operation of the library and supervision of a staff of full-time and
part-time employees (6.2 FTE total). Under direct supervision of the Governing Board of Library Trustees
(herein after “Library Board”), the Library Director will exercise his/her responsibilities in
accordance with the California Education and Government Codes, the written policies and procedures of
the Library, his/her Library employment contract, and all applicable federal, state and local
laws and regulations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Master’s Degree in Library Science, or
Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from a graduate library program
accredited by the American Library Association. Professional library experience,
preferably in an administrative and/or managerial/supervisory capacity in a public
library.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Proven leadership skills in a public
library
• Strong strategic and long-range planning
and analytical thinking ability.
• At least 4 years of professional experience
in public library work, plus two to three years in a supervisory position (may
be concurrent).
• Excellent oral and written communication
and interpersonal relations skills.
• Financial management skills including
budget preparation, contract administration, library finance, state aid, penal
fines and millage funding.
• Demonstrated project management and team
building skills; able to multi-task.
• Knowledge and facility in use of computer
applications and tools; automated library systems.
• Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word,
Excel, Power Point and library database systems
• Possession of a valid California Driver's
License and a satisfactory driving record is also a condition of initial and
continued employment. PREFERRED
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience working with a library board and
with local government officials
• Knowledge of and experience with computer
hardware
• Experience in grant-writing JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Library Director will:
• Manage the personnel, facilities, services,
and operations of the Library
• Provide leadership and direction for the
Library
• Serve as the Library's primary public
representative
• Be responsive to and serve the needs of
Library patrons and the Dixon community
• Supervise the development of Library
programs and the Library’s collections
• Provide budget oversight and budget
planning for the Library
• Recruit, train, and evaluate Library
personnel
• Supervise the keeping of Library records and
the preparation of Library reports
• Prepare and present the Library budget,
monthly summaries of Library expenses and other Library operations to the
Library Board
• Conduct short and long-term planning for
future Library needs and growth
• Implement and enforce Library policies, and
procedures
• Actively seek grants, gifts, and other
sources of additional funding for the Library.
• Provide customer service to Library patrons
and the Dixon community, including but not limited to resolution of Library
patron or community problems/complaints in a manner consistent with excellent
customer service and in the best interests of the Library
• Report on all aspects of the Library to the
Library Board, and implement recommendations, directions and instructions
provided by the Library Board
• Execute any other duties and
responsibilities related to management of the Library
• Execute any other duties and
responsibilities as from time-to-time instructed by the Library Board
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work includes prolonged sitting, as well as
moderate lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, pulling and pushing activities,
manual dexterity, clear speech, and visual and hearing acuity. Work also includes occasional travel to meetings/events
held in other community locations, occasional evening and weekend activities, evening board
meetings, and being on-call at all times for emergencies.
Salary Range: Salary
range $45,000 - $70,000 based on experience. Includes benefit package.
