SOCIAL SCIENCES AND ASSESSMENT LIBRARIAN
OAA Position No. 14-15 LIBR-SOCSCI/ASSMNT-TT
THE UNIVERSITY: California State University, East Bay is known for award-winning programs, expert instruction, diverse student body, and a choice of more than 100 career-focused fields of study. There are two scenic campuses - One in the Hayward Hills overlooking San Francisco Bay and the other in the Concord foothills of Mt. Diablo - plus a professional center in dynamic downtown Oakland. The two campuses' proximity to the major Bay Area cities provides unique cultural opportunities including museums, art galleries, aquariums, planetariums, plays, musicals, sports events, and concerts. Their nearness to the Pacific Ocean and Sierra Nevada Mountains offers recreational diversion as well as excellent laboratories for educational studies. The ten major buildings of the Hayward Hills campus, on 342 acres, contain over 150 classrooms and teaching laboratories, over 177 specialized instructional rooms, numerous student-oriented computer labs and a library, which contains a collection of nearly one million items accessible through its on-line catalog. CSUEB's Concord Campus provides full instructional support for several programs (http://www20.csueastbay.edu/concord/). Its five buildings on 395 acres feature lecture halls, seminar rooms, computer labs, science labs, an art studio, theatre and library. The University has an enrollment of approximately 13,000 students with 600 faculty. CSUEB is organized into four colleges: Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences; Business and Economics; Education and Allied Studies; and Science. The University offers bachelor's degrees in 45 fields, minors in 66 fields, and master's degrees in 31 (in addition to Special Majors). THE DEPARTMENT: The University Library supports the instructional, reference, and research needs of a culturally diverse campus community. The University Libraries consist of 12 faculty and 15 support staff. The University maintains a 2-unit Information Literacy course, which is required for all incoming first-year students and taught by library faculty.
DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The appointee to this position will participate in a full range of faculty responsibilities including teaching credit courses and other instructional and discipline-specific sessions in the library information literacy program; providing instructionally-focused reference services in person and online; serving as a subject specialist and liaison to selected academic departments in the social sciences; developing, implementing, and reviewing assessment analysis methods to enable the Library to more effectively serve our campus community; developing and maintaining assessment tools which measure the effectiveness of library services and instruction in the classroom, online, at the reference desk, and through services such as live chat reference, telephone and email reference and teaching; providing in-depth research consultations for the assigned disciplines; creating and maintaining online social sciences-related instructional materials and content for the library website; participating in subject-specific and library-wide outreach and promotional activities; and assuming other responsibilities as assigned. S/he may be expected to participate in rotational duties at the Concord Campus and work occasional evenings and weekends. Librarians enjoy faculty rank and privileges and are expected to participate in the full range of Library faculty responsibilities and activities expected of a member of the tenure-track, including demonstrating a sustained record of scholarly activity and participating in library, university, and faculty governance committees. This is advertised as a 12-month appointment with a possibility of 10-month appointment. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord and Online campuses.
RANK AND SALARY: Senior Assistant or Associate Librarian, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to work collegially in a diverse, fast-paced environment; familiarity with the principles of information literacy; a strong service commitment; extensive knowledge of information resources in one or more social sciences fields; extensive knowledge of library assessment best practices; familiarity with a broad range of research databases and Internet resources; demonstrated ability to teach, advise and mentor students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds; demonstrated record of scholarly activity; ability and interest in fulfilling requirements in job performance, scholarship, and service to meet tenure and promotion requirements. Desired: Degree in a social sciences discipline and/or demonstrated knowledge of or experience in providing library services to social sciences students, faculty, and staff; one or more years experience in library assessment, including developing and maintaining assessment tools which measure the effectiveness of library services and instruction; two or more years experience in reference and instruction services, preferably in an academic library; experience and/or coursework in the development of online instruction and/or information literacy tools; experience teaching in a classroom and/or online environment; familiarity with common information and instructional technology tools such as course management systems, tutorial creation software, etc.; experience with standard office software, such as Microsoft Office applications, Google docs, etc.
