The
Library
Serving the
city of Santa Monica (pop. 89,736) and surrounding Los Angeles area
communities, the Santa Monica Public Library currently operates four library
facilities in 8.3 square miles. A fifth library, the new Pico Branch, is under
construction in Virginia Avenue Park and is expected to open in early 2014.The
Main Library (104,000 sq. ft.) is located in downtown Santa Monica, and the
branch libraries are located in diverse, residential neighborhoods with lively
commercial districts nearby.
The Santa
Monica Public Library has received a top, five-star rating by the LJ Index
of Public Library Service for the past three years. The city of Santa
Monica is strongly committed to education and to its municipal library system,
which offers exceptional collections, online resources, services, programs and
facilities. The Library’s organizational culture is responsive to new ideas and
encourages staff development at all levels. The Library has a budgeted FTE
staff of 114.8, including 36.5 permanent librarians, and is supported by a total
budget of $12.04 million for FY2013-14.
The
Position
The Librarian
I classification performs professional services in areas of reference, readers
advisory, youth services, adult services, programming, collection development,
computer instruction, web development, community outreach, and promotion of
library services using traditional and social media. Successful
candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to providing excellent customer
service.
NOTE:
The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill one
Librarian I permanent full-time (40 hours per week, with benefits); one
Librarian I permanent part-time (20 hours per week, with benefits); and
As-Needed Librarian I (without benefits) positions at the new Pico Branch Library
and future vacancies at the Main Library and branches. Bilingual skills may be
required for certain positions.
Requirements
Master’s
degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited
college or university. (Applicants must have obtained their degree by the
filing deadline.)
