Job Description:

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Academic Instruction, the Librarian, CF, is responsible for providing library access to general and special inmate populations in the institution. This includes the libraries for the general population, restricted housing populations, and inmates housed in the Minimum Support Facility. 

The Librarian coordinates with the Senior Librarian in the selecting, cataloging, loaning, or the reference use of books and other library materials at California State Prison-Sacramento.

The Librarian supervises the conduct of the inmates while in the library and may be called upon to assume general custody responsibilities in time of emergency.
Establishes procedures for delivery of services; monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the procedures; monitors the library’s compliance with court ordered policies and procedures; ensures inmates’ access to the courts.

Supervises selection of books, periodicals, and other publications; prepares and recommends purchase requests; keeps book collection current and usable; classifies and catalogs books and other materials.

Handles budget preparation and recommends to Supervisor of Correctional Education Programs how library budget should be allocated and what should be purchased; develops projects for federal grants and develops other proposals to secure special funding; maintains liaison with State Library; Department’s Principal Librarian and other appropriate outside agencies.

Provides assistance to law-library users: supervises their activities; provides instruction in the use of the library and encourages inmates to use the library; maintains an environment conductive to study and research.

Arranges inter-library loans for specialized materials needed by general users and legal users; provides general library services to inmates; provides reference services and keeps records and controlled documents.

Performs custody duties as required by proper authorities: maintains order, discipline, helps to prevent escapes; helps insure against inmates injuring themselves, others, and property, keeps work areas safe and secure; inspects both the library and the area of supervision daily for contraband.

Under declared emergency, performs custody duties and other job functions necessary for facility operation as directed by proper authorities.
