Job Summary
This position reports directly to the Head of the Collection Management Services Department. The department acquires new library materials, catalogs new materials, supplies authority control, and maintains the bibliographic and item records in the library management system Alma. The department is committed to a one-week turnaround time for processing new materials with copy. Copy includes Library of Congress Cataloging in Publication (CIP), Library of Congress full bibliographic records, OCLC full contributed copy with useable call numbers and subject headings; added copies, added volumes. Materials may be monographic or serial and be presented in all formats, for example, printed books and continuing resources (serials and integrated resources), streaming media, CD ROMs, DVDs, e-books, and other non-print materials. Materials may be acquired in languages other than English. This position places particular emphasis on oversight and processing of Sacramento State theses, projects, and dissertations in electronic formats, as well as campus scholarship, campus research data, and open educational resources to be uploaded to ScholarWorks, the university’s institutional repository. Shares responsibility for Special Collections and University Archives cataloging.
FLSA Non-Exempt - This position is covered by health benefits, and is non-exempt, (eligible for overtime compensation) according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Minimum Qualifications
In addition to Position Skill Level II requirements, work at this skill level typically requires the following range of skills:

• Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments including a thorough knowledge of functional area policies and procedures and applicable work methods.
• General knowledge of library collection organization and classification scheme and ability to interpret bibliographic records.
• Ability to interpret library unit’s policies and procedures and apply them accurately in performing work functions, as well as the ability to evaluate procedures and recommend changes.
• Working knowledge of institution’s and library’s policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources.
• Basic knowledge of national standards and guidelines pertaining to libraries, including working knowledge of institution’s standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to source and apply such policies and standards to avoid potential violations.
• Full proficiency in the use of automated library system(s) and subsystem(s) pertaining to functional area.
• Ability to fully utilize standard and non-standard features of various on-line resources and standard desktop software packages, such as word processing and spreadsheets, to perform technical work or assist patrons.
• Demonstrated problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems.
• General knowledge of library accounting and budget procedures, including the ability to perform arithmetic operations to track and monitor vendor accounts and budgets.
• Demonstrated ability to compile and present information in an organized manner.
• Effective communication and interpretive skills to be able to assist in resolving patron problems and complaints, assess patron information needs, and orient and guide patrons in use of library resources.
• Ability to effectively provide lead work direction and training to student workers and an understanding of employment and payroll procedures related to student workers

Education/Experience
These qualifications for entry normally would be obtained through the completion of a high school education or equivalent certification plus two to three years of related library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Required Qualifications

EXPERIENCE
1. Two years of related library and/or clerical experience.
2. Experience using library systems and/or complex databases.
3. Experience using and interpreting bibliographic catalog records in online catalogs.
4. Experience with drafting documentation of procedures and providing training to others.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES
5. Proficiency with standard office software packages and systems (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Office 365) and the Internet.
6. Thorough knowledge of: cataloging, following AACR2/RDA; MARC21 Format for Bibliographic Data and Authority Data; Library of Congress and Superintendent of Documents classification schemes; Library of Congress name and subject headings (LCNA, LCSH); OCLC and other bibliographic databases; as well as bibliographic tools such as MarcEdit and Classification Web.
7. Ability to investigate and solve complex bibliographic problems.
8. Knowledge of non-MARC metadata standards (Dublin Core, MARCXML) for processing University theses/projects/dissertations, campus scholarship, research data, and open educational resources.
9. Cataloging for Special Collections requires the knowledge to recognize and notate unique characteristics of these materials and ability to follow special physical handling requirements.
10. Ability to investigate and research complex problems, including analyzing and interpreting information.
11. Strong communication skills.
12. Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with others in a team environment.
13. Strong organizational and detail-oriented skills with the ability to meet deadlines and ensure regular workflows.

Physical Requirements:
15. Ability to frequently move (e.g. lift, carry) library materials up to 10 lbs.
Conditions of Employment:
- Ability to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications
16. Proficiency in the use of the library management system Alma, including Analytics, and of Primo, the Library’s discovery tool.
17. Library Technician certificate (2 year program). Baccalaureate college degree.
18. Experience working in an academic library.
19. Bibliographic and/or reading knowledge of foreign languages.
