INTERN POSITION: Summer Reading Activities Assistant
TERM OF ASSIGNMENT: 20 hours/week for 3 months; Monday through Friday
STIPEND: $1,000

The City of South San Francisco is a fully independent and highly commercialized full-service City with an estimated population of 63,500 growing to 100,000 during business hours. South San Francisco is an international center for the biotechnology industry, housing over 80 companies on 3.5 million square feet and it is strategically located on the west shore of the San Francisco Bay, in northern San Mateo County, 10 miles south of San Francisco.
The South San Francisco Public Library is a full-service library committed to delivering quality services to a diverse community. Library services are available at three sites, including the Main Library, the Grand Avenue Branch Library, and the Community Learning Center (CLC).
The intern will assist the Youth Librarians with three very busy summer programs; REader leader Reading Assistance; Summer Reading Club and Teen Reading Club.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND OUTCOMES:
Reader Leader Program Assistant:
Intern will assist managing the reading assistance program. The intern will match elementary students with Middle School and High School students to practice reading. The intern will monitor the pairs to insure they are meeting and tracking their progress. The intern will help train the teen volunteers who are the Leaders under the guidance of a librarian. Expertise as a reading specialist is preferable but not necessary. The intern will help the Reader Leader pairs complete the goal of six hours working together.
Summer Reading Clubs:
The intern will work with Children and Teen Librarians on programming for the Summer Reading Club and the Teen Reading Club. The intern will assist in planning and implementing a variety of programs for preschoolers through teens under the guidance of the Youth Librarians. The activities include craft programs, game days, movie days, reading club parties, and hired performers. The intern will provide some supervision of teen volunteers. The intern will work at the Main Library and the Grand Avenue Branch Library. The intern will gain experience in working with the public and event coordination.
REQUIRED & DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
We are seeking students who are working towards a college or graduate degree in the field of English Literature, Information Science, Recreation, or other related fields. Experience in working with children in classroom or recreational settings.
Some understanding of child development and learning styles. Ability to handle multiple tasks and activities. Flexibility regarding schedule and task. Confidence in dealing with adults, teens and children.
