Position and Duties

The San José Public Library (SJPL) has Undergraduate/Graduate Student Intern positions available at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library (MLK, Jr.).  The Student Interns will work closely with the Teen Center Librarian assisting in the planning, implementing and providing new teen programming.  Specific duties include, but are not limited to:  assist in the design and implementation of programming, facilitating of book clubs, management of other volunteers, assist with program promotion and marketing, training teens on use of Makerspace equipment and music editing/recording programs.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a motivated team player and be aware of and support, the Mission, Vision, & Values statements of the City of San José and the San José Public Library; have excellent communication and customer service skills; have experience working with a diverse community and a diverse staff; and enjoy working in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

Interns are not eligible to apply for Internal Recruitments with the City of San José, and positions cannot exceed two (2) years.

Desirable Qualifications: 

  • Experience in leading Teen programs or activities 
  • Experience providing excellent customer service 
  • Experience working as part of a team 
  • Experience or skills in Digital, Video, or Audio Content Creation 
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Publisher 
  • Interest or background in MakerSpace Technologies 
  • #LI-DNP

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet the requirements below:

1. Education:

Student Intern: Any combination equivalent to completion of high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university in undergraduate or graduate program.

Graduate Student Intern: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of a Bachelor's Degree and current enrollment in a Master's of Library and Information Science Degree program from an American Library Association accredited college or university. Interns must continue to be enrolled in a college or university during their employment with the City of San Jose.

Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate or graduate program is required. Student and Graduate student interns must continue to be enrolled in a college or university during their employment with the City of San José.

2.  Employment Eligibility:

Federal law requires all employees to provide verification of their eligibility to work in this country. Please be informed that the City of San Jose will not prepare or file a labor condition application with the Department of Labor.
