CHARACTERISTICS: The Lincoln Public Library is hiring a
library assistant level Literacy Coordinator to develop, execute, and manage
the new Adult and Family Literacy Programs, funded through the California
Library Literacy Services program.
This position has primary responsibility over the library’s
Adult and Family Literacy Programs, and provides support duties in order to be
fully aware of library services and integrate the literacy programs into the
library’s broader range of programs.
Essential tasks include, but are not limited to:
• Establishing techniques, curriculum, and procedures for
assessing, teaching, and reporting on outcomes for learners, as well as
training for new tutors.
• Recruiting, enrolling, and supporting adult learners and
tutors
• Matching assessed learners with tutors
• Establishing and maintain contact with community agencies
and businesses that have an interest in adult and family literacy programs and
handing the relating routine questions and concerns of those agencies
• Collecting and analyzing data regarding tutor and learner
activity; assessing the effectiveness of training workshops and coordinating
with trainers to make necessary adjustments
• Providing mentoring support to tutors on topics such as
family literacy, teaching strategies, supplemental materials, learning
disabilities and differences, and behavioral issues in person, by phone, in
letters, and by e-mail.
• Maintaining a database for tutor and learner activity and
budget expenditures
• Promoting the literacy program(s) through various media,
and prepares marketing materials, public information, and event calendars
• Representing the literacy program(s) at meetings, as
requested, and speaking to service clubs and community groups to encourage
public awareness
• Preparing and submitting annual and semi-annual financial
and statistical reports to the California State Library
• Preparing annual program budgets and grant proposal
documents
• Maintaining an active presence in the state-wide Adult
Literacy community, in order to learn and apply best practices
• Assisting in other library programs and services as needed,
in order to maintain knowledge of library services and serve as an ambassador
between the literacy program(s) and the greater library. This position is a
three year grant-funded position with support from city funding, subject to
annual appropriations by City Council. THE

close-knit, collaborative environment. In addition, we expect the ideal
candidate to collaborate with our neighboring library systems and their
literacy programs, our local school districts and county Office of Education,
community groups—anyone and everyone who has a stake in increasing the literacy
in our community.
• Committed to life-long literacy. We’re looking for a
candidate with a demonstrated passion for life-long literacy, and who feels
that adult and family literacy is an essential service that can change lives
and communities.
• Detail-oriented. As a grant-funded program, the ability to
keep on top of the details and provide high-caliber year-end reports is
essential.
• Innovative. New techniques, resources, and studies around
literacy come out daily, and we’re looking for a coordinator who is willing and
able to adapt that information to our community. In addition, we’re looking for
someone who is willing to try new things and to keep the adjusting the program
in order to build continued success.
• Personable. Literacy programs thrive when tutors and learners
feel personally connected to the program, and their first point of contact is
the coordinator. In addition, the coordinator will need to be comfortable
conducting outreach in the community and representing the program to
stakeholders and potential partners. KEY

QUALIFICATIONS: (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry
into the classification.) Education and/or Experience: Any combination of
education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities
necessary for a Library Assistant. A typical way of obtaining the required
qualifications is to possess a high school diploma or its equivalent, public
service skills (able to work in a busy library), and computer knowledge.
