The County of Yolo is recruiting for one regular, full-time position in the class of Library Associate at the Yolo County Library. The current opening is at the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library. This position will work with a creative team of professionals, paraprofessionals and community partners to deliver exceptional service to community members of all ages. The candidate selected for this position may be required to serve at other branches as needed and must be able to work regular evening and weekend shifts. 

The ideal candidate will be a community-oriented professional who is bilingual in Chinese, Spanish or Russian, though other languages may also be desirable. The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic about promoting the library to a diverse community and reducing barriers to access. The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate strong leadership abilities, including training, scheduling and delegating assignments to staff and volunteers; act as a lead person in charge of a branch in the absence of the Branch Supervisor or Librarian; plan, schedule and coordinate tasks to maximize the use of available resources; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with library users, staff, community partners and the public; make sound decisions related to patron concerns and disputes over library fees and materials; solve problems using a collaborative and teamwork approach; and understand written policies and interpret them for staff and the public. The ideal candidate must show a broad understanding and support for diversity, equality and equity for everyone in the community. Experience working in a multilingual, multicultural environment is highly desired. 

Definition 
Under general supervision, the incumbent provides reference and readers advisory services; responds to customer requests and questions; oversees Circulation Desk functions; maintains staff schedules; serves as a lead worker and performs other related duties as required. 

Distinguishing Characteristics 
The incumbent in this classification may act as a lead person in charge of the building, branch, or unit in the absence of the Branch Supervisor or Librarian. Incumbents must have the ability to work independently when required and may serve as lead worker and perform the more responsible paraprofessional library work which requires specific knowledge of library functions and services, and the ability to apply basic library tools, methods, and procedures.

Essential Functions: 

The following duties are typical of those performed by the incumbents in these classifications; however, other duties may also be required. 

Circulation/Public Service: 
  • Provides reference and readers advisory service to customers under the direction of the Librarian; helps customers make effective use of the library; provides a high level of customer service to a diverse community in-person, over the phone, and through email and internet;
  • Develops and maintains desk schedules; ensures adequate coverage;
  • Oversees all aspects of the circulation function, including registration of borrowers and posting and monitoring overdue charges;
  • Responds to customer complaints as appropriate and refers difficult problems to supervising librarian;
  • Serves as lead worker for the Library Assistants and Pages; schedules; trains; may monitor work flow; and models expected behaviors;
  • Creates a positive, supportive work environment;
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with customers, the Friends of the Library, and the community;
  • Assists customers with public access computers; troubleshoots computer and library equipment problems;
  • Prepares time sheets and financial records;
  • Explains library policies and procedures to customers and staff;
  • Oversees branch deliveries;
  • Maintains the collection of local documents and other special materials;
  • Ensures that the building is opened and closed on time; sets building alarms;
  • Receives, receipts, and deposits monies paid for fines and fees and lost or damaged materials;
  • Recommends changes in library policy and procedures;
  • Maintains inventory of branch supplies;
  • Performs outreach and represents the library in the community;
  • May take a lead role at a branch, department, or unit to cover vacations, sick leave, or a vacancy;
  • Expands knowledge of field by keeping abreast of library developments by attending workshops and educational programs and reading periodicals and specialized literature;
  • Works on improving customer service skills by attending relevant meetings and/or workshops;
  • Recruits, trains, and provides orientation for library volunteers;
  • Provides input into collection development;
  • Conducts library programs; may also plan, develop and evaluate the programs;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Technical Services: 
  • Provides a high level of customer service to a diverse community in-person, over the phone, and through email and internet;
  • Responsible for the acquisitions function including ordering, setting up, scheduling and merging carts, receiving materials, processing electronic invoices, and manual creation of invoices;
  • Liaison to vendors to ensure accurate order records and invoices including electronic media;
  • Liaison to library staff concerning questions on orders;
  • Oversees the processing function including label production and ordering of supplies;
  • Familiar with materials processing standards;
  • Trains and oversees processing staff;
  • Creates a positive, supportive work environment;
  • Works with Cataloging Librarian to train support staff and coordinate their work;
  • Performs basic trouble shooting for library computers;
  • Participates in updating and maintaining the library database;
  • Responsible for the maintenance of computers and office equipment;
  • Runs automation reports and notices;
  • Assists Business Manager with tracking and reporting acquisitions;
  • Creates statistical reports for internal and external customers as assigned;
  • Maintains necessary records for section, including procedural manual and statistics;
  • Expands knowledge of field by keeping abreast of library developments by attending workshops and educational programs and reading periodicals and specialized literature;
  • Works on improving customer service skills by attending relevant meetings and/or workshops;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Employment Standards: 

Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university preferably in a library-related major/program; AND 

Experience : One (1) year of library experience comparable to the Yolo County class of Library Assistant I or above, in a mid-size or large public or private library. 

Substitution: Additional experience comparable to the Yolo County class of Library Assistant I or above, in a mid-size of large public or private library may substitute for up to sixty (60) units of the required education, on the basis of one year of full-time experience is equivalent to 30 semester (45 quarter) units. 

License 
Some positions in this classification may require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation. 

Knowledge of: a wide range of library functions and services; basic supervisory techniques; library computer applications; standard reference materials; Dewey decimal classification system, Library of Congress subject headings, and Library filing rules; correct English usage and spelling; principles of good public relations; principles, practices and philosophy of public library work, especially circulation and reference; a wide range of books and authors; principles of descriptive cataloging; a wide range of library tools, methods and procedures.
