DESCRIPTION
The University of California, San Francisco Library seeks an enthusiastic, innovative, and results-driven professional for the position of the Industry Documents Library (IDL) Archivist. This is a full time position at the Associate Librarian/Librarian level. The IDL Archivist will report to the Head of Archives & Special Collections and work in close collaboration with other library departments: Marketing and Communications and Academic Information Systems, as well as several university units: The Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education (CTCRE), Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment (PRHE), Occupational Health Services, Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health and others.
The mission of IDL is to advance health worldwide by providing permanent public access to corporate documents that shed light on industries whose practices harm public health. The IDL Archivist will lead a team that designs, builds, and maintains a web-based digital archive providing public access to nearly 15 million internal documents from the tobacco, pharmaceutical, chemical, and food industries. These documents, acquired largely through litigation, serve as the foundation for collections that foster research that advances public health. This position seeks an engaged and energetic leader to expand existing collections and facilitate their use in teaching and research.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Establishes IDL priorities through strategic planning and creation of policies and procedures; makes resource allocations for the unit and monitors budget, analyzes statistics.
• Guides and oversees the work of the IDL team consisting of an Industry Documents Specialist and two software developers. Fosters a creative, collaborative, and team-oriented work environment.
• Supervises 1 FTE, Industry Documents Specialist.
• Guides and manages the further development of the IDL platform. Prepares functional requirements documentation for new features.
• Identifies funding sources, develops, writes, applies for, and manages grants.
• Manages collection development, appraisal, acquisitions, and donor relations.
• Prepares statistical, narrative, and visual reports suitable for reporting to administration, donors, granting agencies, and the public.
• Expands awareness of IDL collections through publications, instructional programs, presentations, lectures, and other activities; promotes an understanding of their value to teaching and scholarship.
• Collaborates with and supports UCSF and outside faculty, postdoctoral fellows, staff and students in their research based on the industry documents.
• Partners with attorneys at the US Department of Justice to ensure industry compliance with legal mandates for provisioning and indexing of tobacco industry documents.
• Partners with trial and public interest lawyers, expert witnesses, investigative journalists, academics, and other potential donors and users of the archives to solicit new materials and facilitate public access to documents produced in litigation.
• Participates in relevant campus and system-wide committees and groups.
• This position requires scholarship and service that contributes to the effectiveness of the Library, the University, and the profession.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Information Science OR an advanced degree in an appropriate subject discipline with relevant special collections, archival, and digital collections experience.
• Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills, as well as excellent written and oral communication abilities. Ability to communicate effectively between stakeholders from a variety of professional and disciplinary backgrounds, including attorneys, developers, academics, journalists, health and community advocates, donors and administrators.
• Proven grant-writing, fundraising, and budgeting experience.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills, as well as the ability to balance and complete multiple assignments and projects.
• Knowledge of principles and key trends in the field of digital libraries, digital preservation, and metadata standards.
• Knowledge of current best practices related to copyright issues for digital collections.
• Knowledge of legal & ethical issues affecting privacy, records restrictions, and access, as they pertain to born-digital materials.
• At least two years of experience with digital collection in an academic or research library or relevant setting.
• Experience working creatively, collaboratively, and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness in the workplace.
• A strong record of engagement with the profession through committee work, presentations, and/or publication.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Demonstrated sound judgment and ability to set priorities and follow through on them. Ability to adjust priorities and procedures as directed by changing goals and objectives.
• Passion for the public good, public health, corporate accountability, and academic integrity.
• Excellent negotiation skills.
• Proven proficiency in developing digital projects, digital project management.
• Supervisory experience of professional staff.
• Coursework, training, and/or experience in teaching using primary sources and other distinctive content and collections.
• Basic knowledge of or interest in US Court system and civil litigation process.
• Basic understanding of software development processes.
• Basic understanding of databases and data sharing.
• Demonstrated ability to develop written project documentation, process procedures, reports, etc.
Appointment will be to the Associate Librarian or Librarian rank with the level of appointment and starting salary dependent upon experience and qualifications.
