There is currently one vacancy in the Reference Services
Department at the main Torrance Public Library. The hours for the position are
Tuesdays 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesdays 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursdays
5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and alternating Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The hours will total 40 hours per two week pay period. There may
be additional hours available depending on staffing throughout the temporary
period. Priority will be given to those applicants who are available to cover
additional shifts when needed. The duration is unknown, but cannot exceed six
months.
Pay: $28.59/hour
Responsibilities and Duties
The Reference Librarian in the Reference Services Department
performs a variety of professional librarian tasks. Primarily, the position
will require providing reference and reader's advisory service and instruction
in the use of the library to our patrons. In addition, the position requires
the preparation of bibliographies, the maintenance of certain subject areas of
the materials collection and special collections; making recommendations for
purchase of materials, weeding and replacement as appropriate; developing
displays, exhibits, brochures and news releases promoting library materials and
services; participating in cooperative projects with outside organizations,
schools, libraries, etc. Finally, the position requires that the individual
interact with patrons in a courteous and professional manner and defuses
potentially volatile or sensitive situations to ensure quality customer
service.
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate, in addition to the minimum requirements, will
have:
· Strong
interpersonal and customer service skills to interact with peers, the public,
and subordinates
· Programming
and/or outreach experience
· The ability
to work at a rapid pace and think quickly
· Knowledge
of appropriate reference resources (print and online) as well as knowledge
required to select print and/or audiovisual materials
· Familiarity
of and the ability to train others with technology, specifically computers and
tablets.
