UC professional librarians are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining unit, University Council-American Federation of Teachers (UC AFT). This position is in the bargaining unit.

POSITION DESCRIPTION


The Mabie Law Library is an integral part of the UC Davis School of Law, and provides services that support the teaching, research, and scholarship of its students and faculty. The Library’s collection and staff are housed in King Hall on the Davis campus. The Library has access to more than 10,000 databases which are provided through its library licenses, campus, and UC-wide license agreements.

Responsibilities:


• Provides extensive legal research assistance to law students, faculty and other patrons 
• Serves as library liaison to faculty members and provides complex legal research assistance in support of faculty scholarship and teaching.
• Provides legal research instruction to students in both the 1L Legal Research & Writing and 2L/3L elective Advanced Legal Research classes.
• Provides topical resource and research presentations to law school classes, clinic students, RA's, externs, Journal editors, etc. as needed.
• Assists with development and adaptation of new technologies and systems relevant to research services;
• Participates in library’s marketing and communications efforts;
• Actively participates in student outreach programs;
• Actively participates in developing and implementing law practice technology programs for students;
• Contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of reference and public services policies, procedures and publications; 
• Reports to the Law Library Director who may assign additional functions as necessary.
• Initial work hours are in-person M-F 8am-5pm, with several reference desk shifts. Some evening and an occasional weekend shift may be required.

Basic Qualifications:


• MLS or equivalent from an ALA accredited library school; 
• JD or 2 or more years of experience as a legal research librarian
• Substantial knowledge of print-based and online legal research systems and resources, especially Lexis Advance and Westlaw;
• Strong service orientation;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications:


• Demonstrated experience as a legal research instructor.

QUALIFICATIONS


Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • J.D. and library degree from an ALA-accredited school or equivalent 
  • Five or more years of increasingly responsible legal research work, 
  • Demonstrated deep and broad knowledge of legal research sources in both print and electronic formats 
  • Demonstrated understanding of trends in legal research methodologies and legal information management 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative team-oriented environment. 
  • User-focused and demonstrated commitment to high-quality customer service 
  • Relevant library technology skills involving discovery and access 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills


Preferred qualifications


  • Work experience preferably as an academic law librarian, working with law faculty and students.
  • Experience supporting faculty or others actively engaged in conducting legal research.
  • Experience working with California legal research resources.
  • Familiarity with interdisciplinary research tools.
  • Demonstrated experience as a legal research instructor.
