Definition

Library Technical Assistants (Safety) follow established procedures which have been developed by Senior Librarians, Correctional Facility, or Librarians, Correctional Facility. Under the guidance of a Senior Librarian, Correctional Facility, or Librarian, Correctional Facility, incumbents in this classification perform specialized subprofessional duties, such as precataloging, interlibrary loans, book acquisition, and locating simple bibliographic information within the library system of a State correctional facility.

Such work primarily requires a practical knowledge of library functions and services and an ability to apply standard library tools, methods, and procedures within well-defined standards. This classification is distinguishable from general clerical classifications which perform typing, stenography, and general office work, and from professional librarian classifications which are involved in the development, direction, and evaluation of programs and in complex work requiring professional knowledge of the theories, principles, and techniques of library science.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This class is distinguished from the Library Technical Assistant I by the custody requirements imposed by the criminal nature of the inmate population and the security features of the facility.

Typical Tasks

Incumbents in this classification perform a variety of responsible subprofessional library tasks within well-defined standards in such functional areas as book circulation, book acquisition, catalog classification, physical upkeep of library material, book inventory, and other related work.

Incumbents may have responsibility to supervise, train, and evaluate inmate/ward library clerks. Incumbents are responsible for security and control of inmates/wards using library services. These duties include maintaining order and supervising the conduct of persons committed to the Department of Corrections and the Department of the Youth Authority; preventing escapes and injury by these persons to themselves or to property; maintaining security of work areas and work materials; and inspecting premises for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs.

Minimum Qualifications

Or II

Education: Equivalent to completion of the requirements for an Associate of Arts Degree in Library Science.

Knowledge and Abilities

Elementary principles of professional library work and use of standard library tools; classification and cataloging techniques employed in fiction materials and precataloging techniques employed in nonfiction materials; library practices and procedures; data processing and research techniques related to library work; and library materials, including governmental publications, pamphlets, newspapers, manuscripts, periodicals, films, and microfilms.

Ability to:

Communicate effectively at a level required for successful job performance; learn readily, reason logically and accurately; apply good judgment in making decisions in accordance with laws, rules, regulations, procedures, and library policies; direct the work of others; and maintain cooperative relations with others.

Special Personal Requirements

All incumbents must exhibit orderliness, tact, and neatness, and demonstrate an interest in library work and in assuming increasing responsibility. Must be willing to work with the resident population of a State correctional facility.

Special Physical Characteristics

Incumbents must possess and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during physically, mentally, and emotionally stressful and emergency situations encountered on the job without endangering their own health and well-being or that of their fellow employees, inmates/wards, or the public. Assignments during tour of duty may include sole responsibility for the supervision of inmates/wards and/or protection of personal and real property.
