San Marina - The Henry E. Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens - Avery Director


Summary
The Avery Director of the Library reports directly to the President of the Huntington, supervises a staff of 73 librarians and support staff in the Library’s Curatorial; Access Services; Acquisitions, Cataloging & Metadata (ACMe); and Preservation departments. The Library director’s responsibilities also include strategic and financial planning and donor development.

Qualifications
  • Significant experience and accomplishment in academic administration and/or managing research libraries, rare book, manuscript, and special collections.
  • Understanding of and experience in using rare books and manuscripts collections required. MLIS with concentration in rare books and special collections, or graduate degree in archival studies, demonstrating the ability to work with rare materials and to follow established library and archival procedures is preferred. Appropriate skills are typically acquired through the completion of an MS, MLS, MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution and equivalent training.
  • Specific academic subject knowledge in one of the Huntington’s collecting areas – British or American history or literature or history of science – strongly preferred. This knowledge is usually obtained through a graduate degree and/or equivalent training and experience. Subject MA and/or PhD strongly preferred, with favor to these subject areas.
