Assistant Program Director and Head of Books and Serials Metadata
Metadata Services Program
  • The University of California San Diego Library seeks applications from highly motivated, innovative, collaborative, flexible and service-oriented professionals to join the Library as Assistant Program Director of the Metadata Services Program and Head of the Books and Serials Metadata Unit (Assistant, Associate or Full Librarian). Responsibilities of the Position
Reporting to the Program Director of Metadata Services, the Assistant Program Director and Head of Books and Serials Metadata takes a leadership role in programmatic planning, assessment, and administration and is the librarian responsible for leading the efforts and directing the work of 5 FTE to describe and provide access to physical and electronic monographic and serial resources according to national standards. Working in close collaboration with the management team of Unit Heads in Metadata Services, the Assistant Program Director and Head of Books and Serials Metadata will provide expertise on the unique needs of book and serial formats in the multiple UC San Diego databases of record, including Roger, the DAMS, and other systems as necessary.

Assistant Program Director
  • Assists the Program Director in strategic initiatives ensuring goals are met.
  • Act on behalf of the Program Director in her absence.
  • Oversees production statistics gathering, data analytics, and assessment.
  • Assists with fiscal management for the Program.
  • Coordinates program-wide training and provides cataloging-related training to other UC San Diego staff as needed.
  • Oversees Program communication and documentation.
  • As a member of the MS management team shares responsibility for promoting the mission and goals of the UC San Diego Library; personnel and resource management; the development and implementation of new policies and procedures; recommending and adapting new technologies; training; and communication.

Head of Books and Serials Metadata Unit
  • Responsible for the direct supervision of 5 FTE and student employees.
  • Has primary responsibility for coordinating and supervising Books and Serials cataloging (original, copy, and batch processing of physical and electronic monographs, serials, and integrating resources). 
  • Provides intellectual leadership for emerging issues in metadata, cataloging, and knowledge management.
  • Serves as serials cataloging librarian, taking leadership and responsibility for serials policies, procedures, and problem-resolution, and represents UCSD serials concerns to outside agencies such as CONSER.
  • Leads the unit to investigate, experiment with, and implement new approaches and/or batch processes for creating and manipulating bibliographic and authority data, including extended and creative uses of metadata.
  • Integrates and coordinates descriptive metadata practices across databases of record and information systems.
  • Supervises, trains, and sets direction for Books and Serials Unit cataloging staff and students.
  • Provides intellectual leadership and contributes nationally to the development of emerging cataloging standards and maintains currency with issues in bibliographic and authority control, information organization, and metadata encoding standards.
  • Participates in the creation and development of Metadata Services Program priorities, policies, procedures, and goals.
  • Works collaboratively Library-wide to prioritize and improve user-oriented access to library materials.
  • Serves on Library-wide, Campus-wide, and/or UC System-wide committees.
  • Performs original and complex copy cataloging of book and serial materials.
  • Contributes authority records to NACO and creates bibliographic records for BIBCO.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Professional degree from a library school or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to library science.
  • Demonstrated strong experience cataloging books, serials, and integrating resources in an academic research library using RDA, LCSH, LC Classification, and MARC-21 format.
  • Knowledge of the special features of books, serials, integrating resources, and electronic resources.
  • Demonstrated awareness of national and international trends in bibliographic and authority control.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience with established and emerging metadata standards.
  • Awareness of research methods to facilitate the connection between information organization and information needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a fast-paced environment, identifying problems, and offering creative solutions.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with non-MARC metadata formats.
  • Experience cataloging/creating metadata for digital collection repositories.
  • Reading knowledge of at least one western European language, preferably Spanish. 

Salary: Salary and level of appointment in the Librarian series commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the University of California pay scales.
