Salary:   $33.79 - $40.80 Hourly; $2,703.20 - $3,264.00 Biweekly; $70,283.20 - $84,864.00 Annually

JOB INFORMATION
Supervising Librarian positions plan, coordinate and supervise either a region (approximately 11-12 branches) of the City branch library system or several major sections and/or functions of the Central Library Division; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTES:
  • Supervising Librarian positions work schedules may include evenings and weekends.
  • Supervising Librarian employees who obtain a Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science Degree, may be eligible for 5% additional pay.
  • Supervising Librarian positions may require bilingual communication skills for which an additional $0.70 per hour may be paid.
  • The list established for the Supervising Librarian positions may be used to fill full-time, half-time and/or limited hourly vacancies.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
You must meet ONE of the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:
  • Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) Degree AND four years of full-time experience as a professional Librarian.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education (i.e., minimum completed units = 120 semester/180 quarter), which MUST include completion of at least 9 semester/14 quarter units of postgraduate or undergraduate library science course work, AND five and a half years of full-time experience as a professional Librarian.

NOTES:
  • Qualifying professional librarian experience MUST include one of the following:
  • One year of full-time experience supervising a library staff, which must include at least one professional Librarian.
  • One year of full-time experience supervising a branch library with a minimum circulation of 75,000 per year.
  • One year of full-time experience as a Librarian III or Librarian IV in a City of San Diego Public Library.
  • Applicants who do not have an MLS or MLIS Degree must provide proof of ALL library science course work completed, including the course codes, course titles, number of units, name of college/university and date completed.
  • Qualifying course work is that which is considered creditable toward the completion of an MLS or MLIS Degree.


LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License may be required at time the of hire.

SCREENING PROCESS:
  • Please ensure all information is complete and accurate as the responses you provide on the supplemental questions will be reviewed using an automated evaluation system. If you are successful in this initial screening process, your application will be reviewed for applicable education, experience, and/or training to ensure all minimum requirements have been met. Successful candidates will be placed on a list which will be used to fill position vacancies during the next six months (180 days). For each vacancy, only those candidates with the most appropriate qualifications will be contacted by the hiring department for an interview.


PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes that are applicable to this job, which may include but are not limited to the following:  Confirmation of citizenship/legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review/exam (which may include drug/alcohol testing); reference checks; and a fingerprint check.  The fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and/or the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report.  Certain positions may require additional screening processes which may include a polygraph examination and/or background investigation.  All of these processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.  A positive test for alcohol, illegal drugs or inadequately explained prescription drugs, misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of pertinent facts in any step of the screening/selection process may be cause for disqualification and/or termination of employment.
