Palo Alto City Library is looking for a customer-focused, experienced, energetic Adult Services Librarian who is knowledgeable about wide variety of tools used for providing reference services in public libraries, has experience in marketing and promoting library programs via traditional as well as digital means, has experience in using analytical tools to create analytical reports, and has excellent oral and written communication skills.
This position will be based at the newly renovated Rinconada Branch Library and work with all adult librarians throughout the system.

Purpose of Classification
Independently performs specialized and professional library activities of advanced difficulty in a library.

Distinguishing Characteristics
The Senior Librarian is the advanced professional classification within the Library Division. Incumbents have professional experience to perform high level public library responsibilities. It is a broad classification which covers a variety of work situations including advanced knowledge of reference services, facility operation, collection management, library policies and computerized information systems. Significant portion of the day may include direct public contact.


 Essential Duties:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Conducts reference interviews, analyzes, interprets and answers inquiries at all levels of complexity utilizing resources in Palo Alto Libraries as well as other libraries and in the community;
- Keeps informed of new and outdated information resources;
- Provides direct assistance to customers of all ages in location and selection of appropriate library materials;
- Assists customers in use of facility, materials and access tools;
- Be responsible for daily collection maintenance and evaluation, promotion of assigned areas of adult collections and coordination of processing discarded materials;
- Participates in recruiting, interviewing, scheduling, training, initiating and coordinating work of regular, temporary and volunteer staff as assigned; assuming responsibility of the unit when needed;
- Be responsible for all elements of library programming including planning, coordination, promotion and conducting of programs.
- Cooperates with other City departments, community and library groups in co-sponsorship of programs.

Related Functions:
- Coordinates system-wide library committees and may serve on City or library system committees.
- Handles sensitive personal contact with library patrons relative to information needs or library services; refers to supervisor when necessary.
 - May perform other duties of Librarian as required.
 Minimum Qualifications:
Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:
- College degree or a combination of related experience and training substantially equivalent to graduation from a college or university; and
- Three years professional experience as a librarian. Master's degree in Library or Information Science may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
 Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have a MLS/MLIS degree, a thorough knowledge of and extensive experience in services provided in public libraries


Hours:
Tuesday through Saturday with some evenings and Sundays required.
