Positions
& Duties: The San José Public Library System has numerous
libraries throughout the City. We hire Library Pages for each of these
locations, and for our Library Page Substitute Pool. Library Pages selected for specific locations
are normally scheduled to work approximately an average of 16 hours per week,
on a year round regular basis. Library Pages selected for our Substitute Pool
are scheduled to work at various locations as needed. The days and hours
assigned will vary depending on which location you are assigned to and the
scheduling needs of that branch/unit.
Most Library Pages will be required to work some evenings and weekends.
Library Pages are responsible for providing direct customer service, filing materials on the shelves quickly and accurately so that customers can locate the items easily, providing assistance at the customer service desk, assisting in maintaining an orderly and welcoming environment by monitoring the facility, answering questions from customers in person or over the phone, explaining library policies and procedures, conducting basic searches on library catalogues, checking materials in/out, helping customers register for a borrower's card, collecting fines, interacting with and working well with other team members.
These positions require pushing or pulling carts loaded with materials; packing, unpacking and transporting shipment boxes; reaching, bending, and stooping to put materials on low and high shelves; actively moving for several hours at a time, retrieving items from deep bins, and standing for periods of time.

Selection
Process:
The selection process will consist of an evaluation
of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and
responses to the Job Specific Questions. Only the candidates whose backgrounds
best match the position will be invited to proceed in the selection process. Additional phases of the selection process
will consist of one or more interviews, one of which may include a
practical/writing exercise.You will be prompted to answer the following
job-specific questions during the online application process:

describe your customer service skills/experience in the following areas:
interacting with the public, locating materials for customers, answering
questions, explaining policies/procedures, looking for and providing
information, giving directions/instructions, referring to correct
person/location, handling difficult situations and/or taking complaints.

describe a specific team project you worked on and what your role was on the
team.
3. Please describe any work or volunteer experience
working in a fast-paced environment.
4. Please describe your experience entering data
into computer programs. Provide examples
including the type of information entered, type of computer program(s) used and
indicate the number of words per minute you can type.
5. Please describe
your volunteer experience working in the Library or Library like setting and
indicate where you earned this experience.

Qualifications:
Any combination of training and experience
equivalent to:
1.
Education: Completion of two (2)
years of high school or the equivalent.
2.
Experience: No minimum
requirement.
3. Special
Qualification: A work permit is
required, at the time of hire, for persons under 18 years of age.
4. Employment
