ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The City of South Pasadena is accepting applications to
create a Substitute Librarian pool. Members of this pool perform a variety of
professional Librarian tasks, reporting to the Senior Librarian-Adult Services.
Substitute Librarians are responsible for providing public reference and
informational services, collection development, outreach and publicity, and
other professional duties. The work schedule will vary depending on the department’s
needs including day, evening, and weekend hours.
Examples of Duties:
The duties listed below are examples of the work typically
performed by employees in this class. An employee may not be assigned all
duties listed and may be assigned duties, which are not listed below.
Provides professional library services to the public;
answers reference questions accurately; completely and authoritatively in
person, in writing, and over the phone; assists with the library’s materials
collection development; demonstrates knowledge of and helps instruct customers
in the use and enjoyment of the library's collection of books, DVDs, CDs and
other materials, computer catalog, public PC workstations, online databases,
and other resources; ensures that customers are provided with outstanding
customer service and are satisfied with the information provided; acts as a
Reader’s Advisor, suggesting and referring customers to appropriate materials
and resources; prepares, composes, and distributes library promotional and informational
materials; compiles statistics and writes reports; performs other related
duties as required.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES:
Education/Experience:
A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLS)
or Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA accredited program is
required; or eligibility to complete the MLS and/or MLIS degree within six
months of the date of hire. Upon completion of a required degree, proof must be
submitted.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software; understanding
of local library policies and ability to explain them in a clear manner;
knowledge of professional library procedures, systems and techniques;
familiarity with general and specialized reference sources, both print and
electronic; cataloging rules and norms; skill in research methods and data
entry; ability to deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner
and help uphold the Library Code of Conduct and adhere to the Library Mission Statement;
ability to consistently exercise good judgment and apply department policies in
a reasonable manner; ability to serve as an advocate and promoter of public
library use; and to maintain positive working relationships with the public;
department supervisors and other City staff.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Working Conditions:
Environment is generally clean with limited exposure to
conditions such as dust, fumes, odors, or noise. Position requires extensive face-to-face
interaction with the public; reading and writing to help patrons. Books and a
computer terminal is used regularly.
Physical Demands:
Work is performed in both an office and a library
environment and requires sitting and/or standing for prolonged periods of time.
Physical demands include twisting, squatting, bending, walking, reaching,
lifting, and moving library materials and related items weighing up to 25
pounds.
