Position Overview:
  • The University of California, Riverside (UCR) seeks a motivated, proactive, user-orientated Medical Librarian to join the Medical Library Services team. The successful candidate will be part of developing new and established services to support the needs of faculty, students, and staff of the School of Medicine. The School of Medicine is a new, community based school with multiple affiliated faculty and facilities. The Medical Librarian will be based in the Orbach Science Library which is situated across from the School of Medicine education building on the UCR campus.

Responsibilities:
  • Reporting to the Coordinator of Medical Library Programs, the Medical Librarian will work collaboratively with the coordinator to develop and implement instructional, reference, research and liaison services that support the needs of the faculty, researchers, staff, and students of the School of Medicine (SOM).
  • Develop and teach instructional sessions and embed sessions within the School of Medicine medical curriculum, pipeline and residency programs;
  • Create and maintain informational and instructional online and physical materials to support SOM curriculum and research programs;
  • Provide group and individual in-person and digital instruction and consultation to SOM students, faculty, and staff supporting curriculum, research, and administrative needs;
  • Maintain currency and expertise in new and emerging databases, technology, and resources and disseminate information and implement ideas to appropriate users;
  • Participate in collection development activities including; evaluation of new and existing electronic databases and electronic and print collections, selection and de-selection projects, timely purchases within assigned collection areas, participation in the appropriate University of California collections subject selectors group;
  • Acts as the liaison between the Medical Library Services unit and the Science Information Services Team;
  • Collaborate on the development of new services;
  • Create materials to support the outreach program to affiliated SOM members and institutions;
  • Collaborate on the provision of data management information and training;
  • Perform the duties of a librarian liaison to designated departments or research groups within SOM;
  • Participates in general administrative departmental duties, library-wide activities, administrative committees, special projects and library programs; represents the UCR Library on various University of California standing committees and ad-hoc groups.

Required Qualifications:
  • Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent;
  • At least two years working in a health sciences, medical or hospital library or in an academic library supporting health science disciplines, or as a practicing health care professional or in research groups. A second Masters or PhD in a health science field will substitute;
  • Demonstrated experience working with medical or biomedical databases and resources;
  • Familiarity with evidence-based medicine (EBM);
  • Experience in providing instruction, presentations, or workshops and the design of supporting materials or experience implementing programming support including the use of appropriate technology;
  • Ability to use technology for instructional and information purposes e.g. web pages, Libguides, powerpoint, videos, course management systems, and other storyboard software.
  • Ability to analyze, implement and adapt to evolving technologies;
  • Excellent organizational skills, and effectiveness in balancing multiple assignments and projects;
  • Effective oral and written communication;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds including healthcare providers, colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors, and alumni;

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience integrating research skills and knowledge of data and data management into curriculum.
  • Experience in implementing or teaching curriculum within a Medical School and/or pipeline programs;
  • Demonstrated professional activities such as presentations, grants, or publications;
  • Experience or proven interest in developing services in a specific area of medical librarianship e.g. curriculum, research, data management, systematic reviews, EBM.

Salary and Benefits:
  • Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range of: $51,693 - $75,215. Appointment at rank of Assistant Librarian to Librarian depending upon qualifications and experience. Excellent retirement system, health, and vacation benefits.
