This is not a traditional
library position. However, it will provide a foot in the door with the
Sacramento Public Library and the skills would be useful to any library
organization.
Sacramento Public Library is
home to a community-based publishing center at the Central Library in downtown
Sacramento. We are seeking flexible and talented people to help local authors
make their publishing dreams come true. The Publishing Assistant works as part
of the team responsible for overseeing the operation of Sacramento Public
Library’s Espresso Book Machine (EBM), a print-on-demand publishing solution.
Essential Functions:
-Oversee operation and
maintenance of the EBM.
-Assist authors in preparation
of manuscripts to be printed through the EBM.
-Assist customers with
print-on-demand.
-Train coworkers as necessary
in operation of machine and in the mechanics of self-publishing.
-Track and evaluate EBM
performance, income, volume, material costs and client pricing.
-Provide customer assistance as
needed.
-Perform other duties as
assigned by a supervisor.
Experience and Skills Required:
-Demonstrated ability and
strong desire to provide high standard of customer service with enthusiasm and
energy.
-Ability to work independently,
multi-task and creatively problem solve.
-Demonstrated expertise in
Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Excel.
-Experience using layout/design
programs, especially InDesign.
-Excellent verbal and written
communication skills.
-Ability to respond to
computer/mechanical challenges with curiosity and a sense of purpose.
-Detail-oriented approach to
tasks and ability to work well under pressure.
-Well-groomed and professional
appearance.
-Excellent record of attendance
and reliability in previous employment.
-Ability to stand for long
periods of time, lift up to 50lbs. on a consistent basis, 50% to 100% of a
shift.
-Ability to work a flexible
schedule including evenings and/or weekends.
-High school diploma or GED
required
