The
Anaheim Public Library is seeking a Library Assistant to serve as the lead
person for the Bookmobile and Central library, and to perform complex,
responsible paraprofessional library work.
Essential
Functions:
- Provide
support to Librarians by assisting with program development, outreach, and
collection maintenance for the Bookmobile and Central Library.
- Assist
patrons with basic reference and light research, utilizing standard print
and non-print resources. Refer more difficult reference queries to
appropriate professional staff.
- Advise
and assist library patrons in the use of library services and tools such
as equipment and catalogs; conduct a variety of instructional classes in
library technology and resource use.
- Establish
and maintain effective customer service for library patrons and provide
customer service training for staff.
- Develop
and coordinate library programming, including conducting classes, cultural
events, clubs, and special events.
- Select
materials and develop story time programs; implement program service
delivery including children's story-time, outreach to schools, community
events, class visits, and library tours.
- Implement
library policies and procedures; resolve patron concerns.
- Complete
or supervise completion of a variety of complex clerical duties, including
maintaining detailed records, verifying accuracy of information,
researching discrepancies, and recording information.
- Participate in selection of full and part-time staff; train, evaluate, schedule, and provide direction and functional supervision to part-time Library Technicians, full and part-time Bookmobile Library Clerks, other support staff and library volunteers.
- Assist with the development of library collections, including ordering, withdrawals, and inventory controls; make internal recommendations on the selection of books and other library materials.
- Perform
related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications:
- Previous
public Library experience in a senior clerical or paraprofessional job.
- Knowledge
of basic principles of supervision and training; literature and current
events; applications of automated library circulation system; general
principles of current public library services and programs; core library
operating principles and reference tools; principles, practices, and
techniques of public relations, community outreach, and service promotion;
principles and practices of grant writing, data collection and report
preparation; record keeping principles and procedures; modern office
practices and technology; basic software application packages; basic math;
English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation; techniques
for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with
the public, City staff and other agencies' staff. Working with children
and students is highly desirable.
- The
ability to perform varied, complex paraprofessional library work
accurately and under minimal supervision; develop presentations and age
appropriate programs; organize own work, set priorities, and meet
critical deadlines; conduct research projects, evaluate alternatives, make
sound recommendations, and prepare effective reports; access, retrieve,
enter, and update information using current computer technology; use
English effectively to communicate in person,
over the telephone, and in writing; use tact, initiative,
prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural,
and legal guidelines; establish, maintain, and foster positive and
effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of
work.
- Equivalent
to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university
with major coursework in Library Science or a related field and four (4)
years of advanced clerical, technical, or paraprofessional library
services experience or at least two (2) years of experience equivalent to
Library Technician.
- Bilingual
ability in Spanish is highly desirable.
- The
ability to obtain a valid Class C California Driver's License may be
required for certain job assignments.
- Having
or the ability to obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License is
desirable.
