The Torrance Public Library is seeking a dynamic individual for a unique temporary opportunity (not to exceed six months) to contribute to a busy and essential department in the Torrance Public Library. The Torrance Public Library Youth Services Department currently has a vacant Library Assistant II position that would offer the right individual the opportunity to gain and/or supplement essential skills in Public Library Service. This individual should be creative, goal-oriented, self-motivated, have an interest in Youth Library Services, desirous of being an essential part of a dynamic team, and have excellent customer service skills.

This is a temporary employment opportunity for the position of Library Assistant II in the Youth Services Department.

Duration: Temporary Appointment (maximum 6 months)
  
Duties: This position staffs the Youth Services desk, including currently two nights per week as person in charge of the work unit, and alternate Saturdays working with the Youth Services Librarian. The current major duties are logistics and preparation for major Youth Services programs such as First Grade Outreach and Science Month; providing reference and readers advisory services to the public; and managing the Youth Services volunteers, including the Homework Helpers, end processing the youth services collections and under the direction of the Senior Librarian in Youth Services, creating and installing all displays in the Youth Services area.  The Library Assistant II may be asked to step in for the Librarian to conduct storytime or teen program, lead a class visit, or assist with a program. 

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  Strong interpersonal and customer service skills to interact with peers, the public, and subordinates
  Basic knowledge of library services including knowledge of library ILS systems
  Library programming experience (children and teens)
  The ability to work day or evening shifts and Saturdays
  Good to advanced knowledge of the  Microsoft Office Suite including (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher)

Hours:
The hours for this position are Monday and Thursday 12pm-9pm, Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9am-6pm, and alternating Fridays from 9am-6pm or Saturdays from 9am-5:30pm.
