Visalia, CA -- Tulare County Library – Library Literacy Assistant I

Salary: $23,711.00 - $28,897.00 Annually

This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and future full and part-time vacancies occurring in branch libraries throughout the County.  The anticipated life of the employment list is six months.

Typical Duties
Oversee the Early Learning for Families (ELF) and Early Literacy Training program for READ TO SUCCEED. Includes selecting curriculum, overseeing volunteers, selection and preparation of crafts,  guest readers, communication with local preschool and care giving staff; administration and tracking of pre and post training surveys; monitor volunteer staff; tutor adults; presenting workshops to adults in accordance with the American Library Association Curriculum; marketing the literacy program; monitoring logistics of ongoing tutor/learner pairs; perform related duties as assigned. (Essential duties may vary from position to position within this classification. Reasonable accommodation will be made when requested and determined by the County to be appropriate under applicable law.)

Employment Standards

Education/Experience:  Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade.

Knowledge of:  Basic math sufficient to compute fines; basic office skills (Phones, filing, tutoring room prep); computer knowledge; California Library literacy Services and READ TO SUCCEED program.

Skill/Ability to:  Record information from verbal and written sources accurately and legibly; follow verbal and written instructions; communicate information in simple terms to explain use of library materials and services to person of various ages, educational and socioeconomic backgrounds; proofread for errors in typing and writing; establish rapport and effective working relationships with other staff and the public; remain flexible and tolerant to changes in workloads and stress of meeting deadlines; retain and recall information.

DESIRABLE STANDARDS:  Central use and function of Dewey Decimal System; arrangement of subject guide.
Skill/Ability to:  Use library resources to meet customer's needs; use basic research tools such as atlases, encyclopedias and Reader's Digest Guide; type approximately 25 wpm; plan and prepare materials to present to a group; speak Spanish, Southeast Asian, or other customer language; operate computers and other automated office equipment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Possession of , or ability to obtain an appropriate valid California Driver's license.
