JOB SUMMARY:
Performs professional library duties for adults and youth. Participates
in programming, development of the library collection, reference services,
readers’ advisory, cataloging, materials circulation, information technology or
coordinating a specialized service or program. Exercises supervision over
entry-level professional, paraprofessional, clerical or as-needed employees.
NOTE: Librarian II positions may be
required to work evenings and weekends.
Major
Duties:
- Assists internal and external customers in person, by telephone, and online by providing reference information and readers’ advisory services. Selects, recommends and locates library materials appropriate to customer needs and provides referral services.
- Provides instruction in the use of the online catalog, electronic reference systems, and Web resources.
- Selects, schedules, trains, reviews and evaluates work of assigned staff.
- Assists in the scheduling, organization and management of the division or a branch, as requested. May be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the division or branch in the absence of the supervisor.
- Coordinates and directs the acquisition, collection development, maintenance and promotion of library materials for one or more specialized areas or collections.
- Coordinates, implements and/or oversees special library projects, such as the Image Archives, emergent literacy, or community and youth outreach programs.
- Develops and maintains partnerships with a variety of educational, cultural, community and service organizations to promote and stimulate interest in and use of the library.
- Prepares budgets, performs statistical analyses, monitors expenditures and maintains a variety of records. May conduct studies and prepare reports.
- Prepares grant requests and implements grants related to program and collection development. Monitors grant expenditures and prepares reports.
- Recommends the removal of library materials for binding, mending or discarding from collection, as appropriate.
- Develops and maintains library Web content. Maintains databases and indexes, as assigned.
- Coordinates and oversees circulation activities within the library. Responds to inquiries and resolves patron problems and disputes in such areas as compliance with library rules of conduct or late/lost materials fees.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices and procedures of public librarianship.
- Current classification and cataloging principles, systems and practices.
- Library and database resources, informational materials and services in one or more specialized fields of librarianship, such as, adult services, children’s and young adult services, serials, circulation, reference, collection development and community outreach.
- Automated library systems, computer systems, bibliographic utilities, on-line services, database management and maintenance, Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) records, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Alpha Numeric System for Collection of Recording Classification System (ANSCR) and Dewey Decimal Classification.
- Principles and practices of library materials acquisition.
- Conservation and preservation techniques for library materials.
- Effective supervisory and training techniques.
- Computer applications and online databases.
- Effective customer service techniques.
Ability to:
- Evaluate and promote library materials, programs and services.
- Promote interest in library services.
- Select, train and evaluate employees.
- Plan, organize and oversee functional activities of library.
- Prepare studies and reports and maintain records.

Education, Training and Experience:
Master’s degree in Library
Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or
university.
Two years of recent, paid work
experience performing a variety of professional librarian duties in an area of
specialized experience such as adult services, technical services, youth
services, circulation services or outreach services in a public library. One
year of the required Library experience which includes leading and/or
coordinating the work of others is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of, or ability to
obtain and maintain, a valid Class C driver license. Bilingual skills are
desirable.
