Prospect Sierra School, a prominent East Bay independent school, is seeking a part-time Middle School Librarian for the 2014-15 school year.

Prospect Sierra is an independent, coed K–8 school located on two campuses in El Cerrito, California. Overview of Position:
The successful candidate will report to the Middle School Division Head and work with students in 5th- 8th grades.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teach 6th grade library skills classes which cover orientation to the online catalog; digital citizenship more broadly as well as online research skills, including web search and evaluation, use of research databases, and MLA citation format, in conjunction with Humanities research projects; and literature appreciation for reading buddy program.
  • Assist in teaching periodic 7th and 8th grade research skills classes in conjunction with research projects throughout the year; assist in book talks launching independent reading projects for 7th and 8th grade Humanities classes
  • Assist in managing the day-to-day operations of the library, including circulation, collection development, cataloging, readers’ advisory, research assistance, and tech support
  • Provide library supervision as needed and when available in support of Head Librarian (could be recess, lunch and after school)

Qualifications:The candidate must have:
  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Teaching experience in a library environment
  • Experience working with and enjoyment of Middle School students
  • Broad knowledge of children's and young adult literature
  • Fluency in using and teaching information literacy skills
  • Willingness to work with technology department to integrate various media into curriculum
  • Strong organizational and communication skills§ Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to creating an inclusive community that allows for a multitude of perspectives to be heard and respected
  • Ability and willingness to work in teams
  • Flexibility and a sense of humor
